UPS = Battery backup for when the power 'blinks'. You'd plug in anything that's super-important:
Computer and Monitor mostly. Maybe modem. NOT printer or other non-critical stuff.

Gives you a few minutes to safely shutdown the computer if the power fails.

About $80.00 bucks last time I looked. Cheaper than getting a new PC.
Also conditions the power going to your computer all the time, so it makes up for spikes and brown-outs.

That's good, the higher the number, the more time you get and also the more you pay. Mostly you're using the computer or it's off, right? So you'd be there to make sure it shuts down. It has an option to connect a USB cable to it and the computer and automatically shut down the power too.

Could I just plug in the cord to the surge protector that everything's plugged into?
Yeah, uhmmm....well....I read somewhere where that isn't recommended to piggy-back power conditioners. But I do it. :D

So it depends on what "everything" means. If you keep the power off on the printer, yeah, I guess.

It's better to have the UPS plugged in on one "path", and the other stuff on the surge suppressor for the other "path" if you have two wall plugs available...otherwise you're sending all the "juice" through one outlet to the surge suppressor with everything plugged into it.

So basically, you'd want to distribute the power cords across the UPS. The UPS has TWO sides anyway....one side is a surge suppressor, the other side adds a battery backup for critical devices. Depending on what all you have plugged in, you could just replace the surge suppressor with the UPS. That's probably best.

That UPS 6 total outlets - 3 battery backup and surge, 3 surge-only.

The next one up might have 4 of each.

why not wait till tomorrow morning, frannie? you did a system restore today and the repair utility might not run next time you start up - sometimes we do have a little luck ;)
if not, write down whatever crosses your screen and atty might be able to figure it out. not an easy thing though when you're not in front of the misbehaving computer ;)
