and fingers crossed for bear's project!
And now a sticking point! (Surprise surprise.)

They came back with a quote (acceptable, COULD be a bit lower, though). In my reply, I
mentioned my preference for a "no deposit" arrangement, but offered 10% as a token of
good faith. I brought it up first.

Their policy is 50% down. (THAT is high and ALSO not recommended by a number of
    consumer groups.)

    :glare:

My response was that I would need to see the contract and how it deals with "refundability".

    Waiting.

I'm not having them show up in JULY to do late April / early May work. Even if it means
they could be working shirtless and all sweaty. Red long beards and all.

I really wouldn't do that 50% down. But that's me.

How long is the job? If it's a one or two day job, it won't matter much. They need enough to cover their material costs though, which shouldn't be that high for a staining job.

If it's more than two days or whatever, then you might want to debate the 1/2 down thing. Or if you think they'll be no-shows, then don't go near them. But from their reviews, you say they're fine.

Two days, maybe three. One to power wash, 2 to stain and do cosmetic "reconstruction".
There is a lot of detail (railings, spindles, gazebo structure) re: staining.

The amount ($) that 50% is is not my problem. It's the PERCENT that's high. Materials
are stain (4 gallons, 5 if they are sloppy-generous), 1 8-foot piece of handrail, 20 finials.

    Ugh.

The price is very well worth what would be MY time and effort.

I also want to be relatively sure it will be done by dd-mm-yy.

    I shall ponder.

Isn't "stuff" supposed to become easier with age?!

And.... just cancelled "Dad Wednesday" because, as of 13h40, it's still coming down hard.
I'll bet hubs comes home with take-out (for him) because he did not listen to his
voicemail Oh well! He can have it tomorrow, when I do go off to Dad's.

    Off to la cucina.
