 We had a really raucous lightning storm pass through about 02h30,
 which knocked out power.
 Hus gets all panicky about no power.
 Hus calls in to work taking a day vacation.
 Hus now at Home Depot buying a small LP generator that will be
 enough to run the fridge and furnace/AC.
 There was no power for 4 hours. 4 WHOLE hours.

That's about when you just START worrying about the fridge.

Get an electrician to hook it up and put in a proper jack for it. Don't just try and run extension cords like some people do. They have cut-over switches too that make sure you can't have mains on at the same time as the generator. I forget what they're called, but a good idea.

The plug goes into the GARAGE for the winter if you can run it that far. Even the wire to go between gen and box isn't cheap. Or you can build/buy an enclosure for it to put it outside...and trudge through the snow in the Winter. Unless you get one that auto-cuts over and auto starts. $$$

It's only going to be a 1.5K-2.0K watt small thing for fridge. LP,
    recoil start.

This is not whole-house-lit-up-like-High-Mass while the rest of the
    neighbourhood is in the dark.

Saving grace is Home Depot only had things costing over $900. Whew.

Oh. Well you said AC too. So that's ...uh...more power than you think (fridge + furnace + ac + couple lights + water pump if needed)
