I'm a firm member of the "I hate the ACA" club.
Life was easier (and much less expensive) before the government started playing games with health insurance!

Looks like we have both sides of the camp participating in this thread. And that's A Good Thing.

Some have "lost" re: ACA... others have "won". I'm sure there are many many where the whole
thing has been a break-even event.

In my particular circumstance (ie: "income fanagaling"), it's been a "win". Not everyone can do
it. I'm just happy it's possible.

It's a mixed bag for sure. The obvious way for making it all much easier would have been to issue a point of sale insurance credit for anyone below a certain AGI on their tax return and add a health care tax on the 1040 of everyone who has AGI over that level.

You don't HAVE to use the exchange....you just HAVE to have insurance.
If you can get a better rate through your employer some other way, have at it.

But realize that HC costs are skyrocketing for everyone...some of that is due to the ACA's universal coverage mandate and credits, but some of it is also due to profit taking by others and also rising costs.

We need to fix this. Universal HC for everyone, with ONE payer and negotiated rates. Or something. Basically Medicare for all. Birth to death.

I agree. Health insurance in a group size involving the entire population could generate price reductions through larger enrollment pool strength. Insurance companies could share the risk as a large group.

I checked into private insurance carriers. Rates are still high. That, and my wife gets a $300/month spousal credit from my former employer, but AFASIK it has to be purchased through RightOpt and the choices are made from GetInsured.com which is a corporate group insurance provider somehow connected at the state level with HealthCare.gov. They take you to Healthcare.gov to check for discounts and then back to Getinsured.com to purchase the policy under your company's umbrella.

This seems very low, in my experience.

Average Cost Of Health Insurance (2017)
Much probably depends on deductible, co-pay, co-insurance. And I think those
are just states on the fed exchange. (I see no NY.)

Even within metal tiers, there is a choice of "economy" through "cadillac".

I'm so far out of the loop, cannot say "high" or "low" (even though on ACA).

The loop I *AM* in though is 4 years running of NOTHING but problems and
hoop-jumping and dealing with people who canNOT understand simple English.

THAT is why I always share the Annual Saga. HERE. Not "over there".

i have to agree - insurance for my son (29) through aca silver plan is right around $500/month :?:

That sounds way high to me for a 29 year old. Before the ACA my wife and I were covered by my employer for $350/mo for the both of us. Now, she's paying over $1100 a month for herself since the ACA.

Younger is cheaper. There's a point where it gets too expensive to have, yet you need it more than when you were young. Then, you qualify for Medicare and the world is right again.

not sure, bear, but i sure thought it did :?: why else do they ask for age and other stuff
Is his state on or off the fed exchange?

In NY, they do not explicitly ask about age (but they know DOB, so, like, duh)
and there's no question about tobacco use. We are all tossed into a pool.

It's my understanding folks in states with their own exchanges are, as a group,
much happier with ACA. (Count me in.)

(Interesting how an "<<< over there <<<" subject can be discussed with civility
here.)
