Hey @SilverBear, hope this isn't too late. :D :p

You know all that work you did? Not recommended. Just mow em:
Skip the rake and leave the leaves for a healthier, greener yard

As one plant and soil specialist, Dr. Thomas Nikoai of Michigan State University, put it, leaving the leaves on the lawn is " ... not only not a problem, it's awesome." According to an interview at Christian Science Monitor, Dr. Nikolai says that by mowing over the fallen leaves to turn them into smaller pieces, the leaves will actually enhance the lawn's fertility, not kill it off.

STILL don't "get it", huh?

He can go hug a few trees and wear patchouli.

..........

And to tie up another loose end from a couple weeks ago re: mower not starting.

Per our he-man testosteroneful DIYer Atty, I removed the spark plug and went off in
search of a new one. (Actually, I removed BOTH plugs, one from each identical
mower.)

Home Depot does not carry the plug.
Lowes does not carry the plug.
Pep Boys (yes, it's AUTO parts, I know) does not carry the plug.
Auto Zone (yes, it's AUTO parts, I know) does not carry the plug.

But, I bought a can of that "starter fluid".

Came home, wire-brushed the plugs, put back in after a slight spritz of starter
fluid. Nope. Let one battery charge for a few hours. Nope.

Ordered the plugs off Amazon. To get free shipping, added mower oil (YES, I know)
and gas treatment for over Winter. I will try again on Tuesday. I will even put in one
brand new battery.

I am anticipating that both mowers will go for a Spring tune-up.

Or... Atty can take a drive over here and show me what's being done "wrong".

Does it "try" to kick over?

Anyway, if you were not able to solve it with simple stuff like that, the next step is to either get good and small engine diagnostics/repair (AKA DIY) or to take it in.....

Assuming the choke cable felt like it was working OK, and you did any "priming" of a small engine (some of the real small pull-start type ones don't have a choke, but you kind of flood them a bit by pushing a priming bulb beside the carb).

These may need carb work. You could try checking that the air-cleaner is clean so it can get enough air.
