This was a big surprise to you? IMO its more so that we the people gave big food the excuse they needed - LOCKDOWNS and now demanding vaccinate or stay home... This is nothing but politics and control.
Tucker had a good piece on this just yesterday comparing the actions with what the communist party recommends.

American people haven't a clue. When you increase the population demand increases also. Then demand increase those who can afford to pay more will.

When there are not enough of drivers, warehouse workers and people to stock the shelves the supply chain gets bogged down. I believe right now we have container ships filled with imports waiting to unload but we can not get the products on the shelfs.

You don't have to guess!
