can't believe your utility has not switched over to meters that can be read remotely :?:

hiya, dale!
Popping in only to let you in on a little something
regarding "smart meters"...

"Smart Meters" allow your utility company to
monitor your usage during peak hours and then
charge you accordingly.

It's NOT all about automated monthly meter
reads.

They can - and do - see how much electricity
you use during "normal" dinner-prep time and
then charge you a higher per-kwh rate during
that time. And the same for gas... and whenever
the peak times for that service may be. Probably
during that same dinner-prep time. ONLY
guessing.

Locally, the utility company is officially now into
a 3-year window to switch everybody over. There
is a choice to opt out, but it will add a monthly
surcharge to the bill... until you finally give in and
allow them to install a "smart" meter.

It's "smart", alright.

not exactly the way it's supposed to work around here:
"Supposed" being the key word.

So, yeah... cook your dinner at noon or 8-9pm to avoid
peak-use hours. or else pay the price.

You did see where I mentioned we (here) are able to opt
out, but then have to pay a monthly surcharge. You saw
that, yes? It smells of something.

That does NOT smell like cow (or other barnyard) droppings
at all?

How is Geoff doing? I  him .

There is a fix for that. Go solar they say its free energy and clean...
 x10

"They say"!!!

FREE!!!

Price it out.

What's the break-even point in terms of years?

Tell me... what's that?... how many?

Plan to be here then?

I don't.

Let the young'uns embrace it. And hug it and
squeeze it and love it and call it "George".

You know... many decisions I make now are based on
anticipated life expectancy.

Will this-or-that provide enough of a benefit to me
given how many years I (probably) have left. I have
no legacy in kids or grandkids, so I am unable to
relate to future generations. Let the future generation(s)
take it upon themselves to make the changes now which
will provide THEM benefits. They have the energy and
impetus. Me, not so much.

It takes TIME... the infrastructure. Design, manufacturing,
procurement of parts, building. Not overnight and most
likely not in my lifetime. If anything, it should have been
done years ago, but I'm not one to point fingers.

I have other things going on.

I could concern myself with "will my nursing home have
the right air conditioning" to be comfortable. Or heating.
Kind of late now.

JUST an example: Do I spend many MANY dollars to
renovate and update the interior of my home? Or, do
I just live with it?

Get what I mean?

it sure does! i made the switch to geothermal 15 years ago and that will probably be the extend of my 'greener' participation. maybe an electric car but that's far from certain View attachment 980673
That was a smart move, Tibby. heat-pumps are much more efficient.

Geo works great if one has the land and proper
topography. Gotta dig deeply and have the space.
yup, 6 ft deep and about a 1000 ft of loop ......
(decided on a horizontal system and not a vertical one which means digging another well)
