What is this thing? Why don't they just use mesh????????? (would that work Tibs?)
It's an rba, designed for silica I believe. Some folks are setting them up with a vertical coil and using hemp packing in a carto-like set up.

this is one of the best picture posts on the vertical setup with hemp - it's different from the gennys, atty, doesn't lend itself to mesh very well

Build 3c made it 72 hours without a single tweak! It was a little harsher than my gennys, but not in a bad way, I rather liked it. Kind of like inhaling cigars vs cigarettes.

Tore it down tonight to experiment with Renee 41 wire. Heard some good things about it and decided to give it a try. It is rather springy stuff so you need to use some tension when making your coil, consequently it doesnt lend itself to AO wicks.

I built a simple jig for it. Lock down one end of the wire under the screw, then stick a #49 drill bit in the hole and wrap your coil.

Grabbed the loose end of wire with a pair of channel-locks and was able to get plenty of tension when wrapping the coil.

10 wraps and done....

Did the squeeze the coil in some tweezers and torch routine, and installed. Didnt like how it loosened up at the top so I took it back out and retorched it after taking this photo. Only this time I torched AND quenched three times. The curvature of the leads held their place perfectly, they snapped back in like a glove.

Wrapped some raw fiber around the coil, threaded it through the negative lead loop to get a good wrap.

Filled up the cavity with my cut and saturated fiber. Used a syringe to pull out the excess PG when it got too messy. Was able to fill all the nooks and crannys very precisely.

Russian 91% Build 4
Vertical Nano Coil, R41 wire, Hemp packing.
27g R41, 10 wraps around a #49 drill bit, 1.2 ohms.
Dry burned the coil before wrapping it in fiber and it glowed even from the middle out.
This coil is like a tank, it will stand up to many wrappings, might have to use a cutting torch to destroy it. You wont bend it by accident, thats for sure!

I burned most of the PG out of the fiber while test firing with the cap off, so I had to prime it once to get it going.

It is hitting strong now with no flooding or dry hits, still a turbo vape but the harshness is pretty much gone. Must have been a difference in the way I packed it vs build 3c. I suspect it was because I was much more careful to get several wraps UNDER the negative coil loop. I guess it could be the wire but I doubt it. I think the main advantage of the wire is the lower resistance and the tank like durability.

atty loves to tinker! maybe he's ready for a trip to nyc - you know, rockefeller center! ;)
Any and all are welcome :) They might even have the big tree up by now!
Please let us know as soon as you open that box! ;)
I did open it...and then closed it when I saw all those intimidating little parts!
I'm sure I'll toy with it in the next few days. I just don't expect to have it up and running on the first try :D
