There might not be any one to evacuate :?: They took the dogs in and they did not find any one. They have been moving the debris all day and still haven't found any one so hoping they never do. Not sure if or how many people are missing. I was glad to hear that the fatalities went down to 24, some one was counting people twice

Hope you all had a good day!

Hi, Fudgey! No, no, I meant before the tornado, not afterwards... Some kids were moved to the nearby church which had a cellar or a safe room, but others didn't. That's what I couldn't understand. And how a school even be built in the tornado alley without a shelter is completely beyond me.

Just what I've read here Katya, I'm certainly no expert but...

Reporters have asked the same question as to why the older children were moved. So far they haven't gotten a solid answer, but one theory going around is that it was easier to move the older children since K through 3rd are younger and thus don't follow snap directions as well. There also may have been limited room to shelter them all in places like bathrooms and closets since hallways have been ruled out. Turns out, hallways are nothing more than giant wind tunnels. Makes me shiver when I think about all the elementary school years I spent doing tornado drills in the hallways of the elementary school I attended.

As to the shelter, from what I heard on the news tonight it's a budget thing. National news said that it would cost upward of a million dollars to put in an underground shelter big enough to service an entire public school. Here's the news piece that explains it: Red tape delayed safe rooms in Moore - Video on NBCNews.com

This is depressing. As you know, I live in earthquake country and both my kids attended public schools. They had fire/earthquake drills every couple of months and everybody, including kindergartners, knew exactly what to do and where to go. I used to be a parent volunteer and participated myself in many drills.

I just can't wrap my head around it... One can't predict an earthquake, but a tornado? They knew it was coming...

Good morning y'all

so, Katya, part one is that with tornados you know they're coming...but don't always know exactly where they're going. We're also an area in which basements are difficult/expensive and many places don't have them (my safe room is a closet). In some cases of severe weather predictions, schools here have been dismissed early, leaving the kids on the roads/in transit, or at houses that aren't as strong as school buildings. Moore did a better job with prep than Birmingham does. Part two is that IMO it is about politics/money. Money for education itself is not a high priority in many/most places, let alone money for keeping children safe at school. Think of all the locations (ie inner city) where kids are at risk of violence going to an from school everyday, with no real attempts to fix the schools so that they are safe enough for kids to get an education. Then try scare up money for safe rooms from weather events that might or might not happen.Think of the children may be a big rallying cry, but if taking action for the children costs money, it's not likely to happen. [ /end rant]
