A little experiment. Simple and surprising.
Took the tobacco out of 1 cig and put in a cup with about 2ml-3ml of VG/vodka. Color (at least) began to change within minutes.
I have done this before, gently heating it on a coffemaker hot plate but never actually vaped it; as it dried out it went very dark (probably oxidised); that was some weeks later. To be honest I had forgotten about it.
Anyway, back to today. After 2 hours I decided to try it. Golden tobacco color; very distinct color even in a very small amount but not a dark brown, but a quite bright orange color. Looked very clear away from the bloated tobacco pieces so without even straining it, withdrew a little with a syringe and put it in my atty.
First surprise: very definite taste, almost exactly like the cigarette it was made from. So distinct that I'm sure I'd be able to tell what brand cig it was. I'm not a fan of the tobacco taste, but it was almost a close replica.
Second surprise: a little overfilling combined with a sticky auto battery meant i needed a good draw, and got some
juice in the mouth. Quickly to hiccups and unpleasant throat feeling. The taste on the tongue - a warm, tingling sensation felt little different from my usual 36mg liquid.
Third surprise: without being conscious of it, I began to get back to my work, and when i thought I had n't had a smoke for a while, I actually thought that I didn't want one (it's a habit to have a smoke when stuck and need to think over what to do). Have been wondering if this was placebo for the last hour before posting. All I can say is that I wasn't thinking about the something missing at this time, was just thinking about the taste and if my sums were wrong.
Fourth surprise: Doing the sums, something doesn;t seem right. Either the extracted content was greater than I thought, my sums are wrong, placebo is very strong (I know it can be, some 40% of even prescription drug effect), or ...
The sums: 1 cig rated as 1mg nic inhaled after combustion. Assuming about 10% efficiency (an oft quoted figure for smoking), this means about 10mg nic available in the tobacco. I'm assuming I got all of it (to be safe). So the liquid made was only 5mg/ml. Yet seemed much stronger. Although I didnt really like the taste (tobacco heads would though), I did seem to find it more satisfying. That would not be surprising if the liquid was on a par concentration-wise, but this was weak. And 2 hours soak at room temp is not long. Maybe it was 3 hours. The only certainty in this first try is that 1.00 cig worth of tobacco was used
Perhaps the 1mg is based on smoking just 2/3 of the cig. Perhaps there's more than 10mg nic in there. Perhaps the minor alkaloids are less lost this way, compared to the nic. Lot's of don't knows. But very interesting.
edit (add): didn't actually measuer the liquid added; was probably more than 2ml, meaning the liquid was even weaker. Didn't preclean the atty thoroughly either, but could sure taste the new stuff coming through. Will be more methodical next time. This was just a very quick try out; didnt even stir the stuff.
ps:the taste really surprises me - I had always thought the taste was almost completelt that of the tar and ash; not so.
pps: the color is pretty strong. If swish it around the cup, even the thinnest layer left is distinctly yellow. Reminds me of iodine tincture. edit: just checked, iodine tincture is more pure yellow and looks greenish in comparison. The T extract is more orange.
pps: the liquid just smells almost all of vodka.
pps: the tobacco didnt bloat out as much as i expected; didnt change that much in fact.
That was my first WTD (whole tobacco dissolvables) experiment, in the name of science, obviously; not recommending this.
