Group 3: high predisposition to nicotine addiction, high predisposition to tobacco MAOI addiction.

This is me to the "T".

I got mad last night while watching TV. I began to see a pattern in the advertising. The NRT's and Chantix is being heavily advertised right now. I started wondering why all of the sudden are they coming out like this. Are they really trying to get more people to quit smoking? Then it hit me, it's all about the money, they are trying to cash in on all those folks who made a New Year resolution to quit.

So should I be mad about all the people who tried one of these programs and failed? Or should I be glad for the small number of people who will successfully quit smoking?

(ETA: Thanks for reposting that excellent summary, OTD, and for the link to TW's proposal -- very interesting. And welcome, bifff!)

My pleasure Madame!

Away..
Thanks for all your concern for what seems like such a silly problem. More odd than anything. Looks like the cause is rearing its ugly head. Had a toothache off and on for months by 2 back teeth. No noticable cavity and it would onl last for a couple hrs. Now, its been here for 3 days and getting much deeper in the jawbone and I'm getting an earache too. Probably an abcess and inflamation of the dental nerves will cause the problem. I'll be calling the dentist Monday and get an xray.

a2d, hard to be mad at people trying to quit, but the ad tactics are shameful. I figure every analog that isnt smoked is a plus. Try to make something positive from it. Many of us here arent trying to quit, we are looking for a safer alternative to something we enjoyed without going off the deep end in the process. So we now find that for some the nic does it and they eventually quit or are content with the new found source and others find its more than nic thats the issue.

dataguru, the burning is normal and lessens with use. I have a great spot above my canines I like to use. I keep a portion in quite a while and I'll roll and knead it with my teeth occasionally and swap sides.

I don't agree with this study for one good reason. One of the disclaimers now being disclosed is that anyone with depression symptoms shouldn't take Chantix. This was not stated earlier and is probably one reason why the issues with Chantix were happening. Apparently anyone with depression whether under treatment or not is at a high risk for issues Chantix.

Good point.

And it seems to me that quitting smoking has a significant chance of causing chemical depression in itself. That, combined with these disclaimers, suggests a good chance of a Chantix catch-22 which may not even be predictable based on pre-existing depression.

a2d, you did not make a fool out of your self.
Good honest posts are valuable. They all dont have to be success stories.
Just as much or can be learned from mistakes or things didnt happen like I thought they would. Your post may save someone a great deal of grief or explain what happened to them and they were afraid to post it for fear of ridicule.

We are lucky to have a group willing to be open and share the good and the bad.
Its a good thing too that people realize that 2hrs is abt all the time nicotine stays with you. So if you do get yourself in trouble, relief isnt that far away. If more serious symptoms would arise people can judge if they need more urgent care or not.

I'm sure you post will benefit someone at sometime.
Also glad to see the snus helped and you made it out of the bad spell you were in before.

Edit: a2d, you might want to edit your post and add a link to it.

Vapor, Oh, that sounds so painful. I don't know if this is helpful, but I'm really big on tea tree oil helping. Recently I had a cavity filled, it hit the nerve and I got an infection that required antibiotics to clear up.

I also used tea tree oil, since it goes layers deep in the skin to fight infections and it will numb the pain at the same time. But, beware if you've never used it - it's an acquired taste that you don't swallow, use very, very little, yet it can work it's magic.

We use around here as a first aid for any cut, etc.

Well, just thinking of you...in case, this could help until you get to the dentist.

Ouch. Reminds me of the time I ignored an occasionally sore molar for too long (months) only to have it disintegrate while I was in the mountains a day and a half from anywhere. I'd never had so much as a cavity before so I figured it would "go away on it's own". That was a fun walk back to civilization.

Sorry OTD I moved that post to it's own thread. I thought I had killed this thread and I didn't want to do that.
No worries about it at all a2d (though your post surely merited its own thread to bring in discussion). I'm not sure this thread can be killed. It's a well-fortified outpost. ;)

On the snus front:
Yesterday, I had a six-hour drive to pull off, and driving always gives me the strongest "ritual" impulse to smoke and calm down (too much thinking in circles, y'know?).
So it was Parliaments vs. snus vs. miserably keeping up the (rather meaningless) "change no variables" instruction... and snus won.

Half an hour with a General White Mini Mint under my upper lip and ... the craving was diminished, and I felt noticeably relaxed. I chased it with vaping and even the solo nicotine actually felt different -- more soothing than usual.
(Has anyone else found this? That vaping feels different with/after snus?)

The only part I find unpleasant was the sheer saltiness and the anise undertaste. I don't mind taking it as 'medicine' (heh)... But are there brands that won't leave me feeling like I just tasted those sadistic Swedish double-salt licorice candies?

I look forward to seeing how snus works as an ongoing remedy now... I'll update with any developments (and maybe some reviews in the subforum).

Many thanks to you guys! I wouldn't have tried this without your information and testimonials...OTD, TV, TBob, and now a2d had me convinced. :)

ETA: another this morning while my anxiety levels were up, and similar effect...and the taste is becoming much more tolerable already (that's what happens when you like a drug's effect, isn't it?).

Yes, I have found the vaping experience is enhanced by the snus. It usually will result in a better throat hit for me, but not always.

That is one thing I found unpleasant at first was the salt. It gets better as time goes on. I have noticed that the General White Mini Mint to have the least amount of salt taste so far. The Lab 02 is also low on the salt taste, but generally lower on taste as well. I like the General White Wintergreen, it is very tasty as well but the salt taste is there just not as much as some.

Good to hear you've had a pleasant 1st foray with the snus Madame. I look forward to the pleasure of your words in the Smokeless forum from time to time now!

My first snus were particularly high in salt and there was no way I was going to believe it when others said the body's notice of the salt diminishes in time. But it does indeed!

Got my snus on order. OTD & TV twisted my arm. ;)

And another addition to the Smokeless Forum, see ya rick!

Madame,
Glad to hear of your success with the snus. The supression of the cravings is a good sign and also a good motivator to continue. The burning and saltiness does decrease with use. Now is the time for the "fun hunt". Finding your favorite brand/s and flavor/s.
With a snus in place, vaping seems more effective. Personally I get more satisfaction from it and vape less overall. I can even vape a lower mg.

Since we all know as individuals are need or requirements will more than likely be different, you may want to try the Discreet or Camel snus. They are less salty, actually sweeter to me, but they don't pack the same punch as Swedish. You may find they supply your need level with a more pleasant delivery.

Rick,
Wish you the best. It doesn't take very long to tell if snus is filling the void.

Thanks to OTD, TV and Vaporer. After trying 510's, 801's, 901's, KR808's, E9's and a few others, I'm at the end of my rope. There must be some relief. Maybe Swedish snus is it. I'm hanging on by my teeth (as OTD said).

Rick.

Probably not a good idea to mention teeth and ODT in the same sentence. He's had some issues there. :D

For those that need it snus has a kick that e-cigs can't match, though it's a nice gentle slow mode kick. For most of us hanging out here its been the missing piece.
