now it's been a while since i've used an atty...but...
so i opened it, blew out the primer that was in it, put juice in and it tasted awful.
repeated the blow out primer, let juice sit in it for 20 mins, still awful
i put it in boiling water for 20 mins, let juice sit in it for 2 hours, still awful. no juice taste at all, just taste of primer.

what am i doing wrong?

How much juice did you put in after blowing out the primer, and/or after the boil? It's mentioned alot around here that you should only drip 2 or 3 drops at a time, which is true, but when it's brand new or just cleaned (and after the primer fluid is removed) you should initially add about 6 or 7 drops and then let it sit for a few moments. You may even need to add 2 or 3 drops after that too to get it started right. You may already know this, but that's the only thing I can think of, unless it's just a bad atty. Also, what voltage are you vaping at and what ohm is the atty. You may be burning the hell out of the juice. Is it possible you're using a LR atty with a 5v regulated device or a VV device set to high voltage?

This isn't a scientific opinion, but sometimes you just kinda gotta break them in like a new pair of shoes. New or freshly cleaned atties can disappoint you and annoy you for an hour or so and then suddenly they'll be awesome again just like they're supposed to be. Unflavoured pg/vg can really help with that breaking in period so you don't have to waste something yummy on it.

Someone who really knows how to do it right can probably tell you how to fix it up in five minutes though. :D

I hear this story quite often. Did it myself with a few atties until I figured out what I was doing wrong. The first thing I do with a new atty is an alcohol bath, and then blow it out (no need to let them sit for hours on end). Prime with for or five drops, and then let it sit for a while. Now hear this next step! Drip two drops and take one hit. If you vape the atty even remotely dry on this first fill the taste may be off or taste metallic forever. Then drip a coupe of drops and it should be ready to go. Don't worry about flooding the atty, just blow it out and continue on. It is far better to flood the atty than let it go dry while you brake it in.

The machine oil on the coil wire is not water soluable, that's why I use alcohol, and that's not the discription you gave above. If you put heat to the coil before cleaning it, the oil is inside the wire now baby.
