OK, I'm going to throw this out there... I'm studying for a PhD in Sociology/Criminology and at some point, there's the possibility of me giving a paper at a sort of local conference. I do vape, I'm not just here to write a paper but you guys have inspired me! I am not monitoring your posts and certainly not conducting any related research at this present time but.... is there any interest in helping (answering questionnaires etc) for a Sociological paper? I just wanted to gauge the response to this before taking the idea to my professors. I have not yet run this by the mods and would certainly do so first.

I'm presently seeing the title of my paper related to deviance- how vapers/smokers are perceived by themselves and by others. I'm not suggesting that we are deviant in a moral way, but rather we are seen as being a bit naughty.

Ethically, you would have to come forward and agree to answer questions for me and I would make every attempt to make a copy of my paper available to you all following the research.

If you are interested, please let me know! I wont/can't start anything until it is run past the mods and my professor but, like I say, if the interest in helping is quite strong, I'd LOVE to write something about this!

Yepper, sign me up!

Just noticed your location. For a round trip ticket, I'd be glad to be a 'show & tell' during your presentation!

It would depend on several factors.

I hear the word "Sociology", and I get terrified. Most people do it insanely wrong. Most of the time, in the US, that word actually means "pop psychology with even less thought put into it that does nothing but hurt all of the causes involved."

I'd need to know where you go to school and some details about your program and your areas of research. The fact that you're from the UK means that you're probably better situated than the Americans I'm used to. Most of the sociology texts I've read and not hated were written by britts or Germans, IIRC.

Please actually understand what I'm about to say before responding (to others as much as the OP), but there's a simple litmus test: if you're learning from Second-Wave Feminists, I don't want anything to do with it.

Additionally, I'd like to know at least the gist of your thesis. Knowing all the details would probably taint my answers, but if it is something in the realm of "vapers see themselves as 'a bit naughty', ostensibly because of [some list of factors]", I'd probably be in. And I'd be anxious to see the results (assuming, of course, that you can do the right math to support your conclusions). If you aren't willing to do that, if your question is too expansive, if you can't tell me the types of statistics you're going to use, or if they're the wrong statistics, I don't want to have anything to do with it.

All-in-all, I'm not the ideal person to study because my opinions are probably not worth the time it would take to convince me that your paper is worth giving them to.

Sorry for sounding so negative. It's just that you brought up–in that very short OP–several issues that I find very important and that years of living in America and reading related literature have led me to believe are usually horrible, horrible traps caused by a very biased and incomplete understanding of the ideas involved.

I just filled out a survey. You may want to look for the thread. It is a pretty thorough one. Just do a search on survey. There is a link leading to another site. May give you some Ideas of what folks are asking. Not sure if plagiarizer would be an issue. Been out of college a long time and things have changed. Was 3 long pages. Did not see any results posted at the end.
I would be willing to fill one out.
