No worries. It depends on the juice you use.

My cherry and orange juices don't leave color behind, but my mocha does. The juice itself is fairly light in color, but as soon as it is heated, it gets very dark brown. I believe that it is due to the flavoring. You are not doing anything wrong.

As far as safety, I don't think that any of us can answer that question with 100 % certainty. The flavorings are commonly used in the food industry, but it doesn't equal to safe to inhale the heated stuff. The good news is that if most of it stays behind in the cart, you are not getting it in your lungs.
