Sore Throat and Headache

Yesterday was the first day of vaping for my wife and I. She seems to be getting headaches triggered by vaping. I had a really sore throat by the time I went to bed, and it was even worse when I woke up. She was getting the headaches even before she dropped the cigarettes and the juices we have don't have nicotine. My throat feels burned (kind of like after taking lung hits from a short "herbal" pipe back in the day, when I was young and foolish). Also, I have not smoked cigarettes (or anything else) for many years; so, it can't be blamed on the effects of quitting cigarettes.

Here's some more info. We have volt batteries and we tried a tobacco sampler pack from smokelessimage.com. My wife did not like any of the flavours from them at all. So, all she's been vaping is nicotine free Martyr Red from Red Rock Vapor (50/50 I think).

Does anyone have thoughts, comments, or advice on the matter?

    No you can't
Why in the world are you vaping since you haven't had a cig in years?

Your wife getting headaches could be from the effect of nicotine withdrawal, there are times I have to increase the nicotine level because of headaches for a few days then I lower it back down.

Most menthol smoker stay on menthol flavor, try some of the RY4 flavored juices out there it might help.

Well if you haven't smoked anything for years, I guess I'm not surprised your throat would be sore after inhaling heated tobacco flavored eliquid vapor for the first time in years. I would guess the same thing would have happened if you decided to smoke cigs (or the herbal stuff) after being in "retirement" for so long.

Kinda like saying I've been a professional couch potato for the last 3 years and yesterday ran a marathon. Why are my legs so sore today?

As for you wife, my guess would be if she just stopped the cigarettes cold turkey and turned to 0 nic ecigs, nicotine withdrawals may be a culprit. Perhaps she should ween herself off the nicotine first. Although vaping mimics smoking pretty well, it is different.

Not only that, analog cigs have 1000's of other chemicals that her body is used to getting as well.

If she is trying to quit, take it slow--it's not a race. Every time she picks up the ecig instead of an analog is a victory and less of the tar and other junk that makes the cigs so bad. Ween off that stuff and the quit will stick.

It seems most of you are quick to blame either too much or too little nicotine, but as I mentioned in my original post, my wife has not yet began the quitting process. Yesterday we simply tried out the vaping products. Today she did skip maybe 2 smokes and vaped instead.

I was thinking it could be some sort of PG or VG intolerance. Has anyone else experienced such a thing?

drink ton of water. vaping dehydrates and headache and sore throat might be due to getting dehydrated. on the days i don't drink water too much, i get sore throat at night. it feels sore, but it has that dry feel also. and i used to have baseline headache all the time, but after my med for depression and anxiety, i don't have that any more and vaping is not triggering it. but if i don't drink water, i get slight headache. soft drink doesn't help. i have to have plain water to get rid of them. or gatorade. .

Sorry, I just assumed "dropped the cigarettes" meant she was no longer using them.
Definitely people on these forums and elsewhere have noted their intolerance to PG or VG (Youtuber Indoorsmokers is one that comes to mind)

If "She was getting the headaches even before she dropped the cigarettes" then as someone else suggested a doctor may have the best tools to diagnose.

    Good Luck!

This is what I would do, since it's you and your wife having issues I would put off vaping for a few days to make sure nothing else is going on. If it all goes back to normal then I would resume it again and then if it continues to happen of cause there's something going on with vaping. I also would use this time to read up in on this board what VG/PG and the effects also nicotine has had on folks , in a few days you'll be well educated on the subject. Just don't forget drink lots of water when vaping and don't share the device vapor tips with each other and keep them clean.

I myself have an intolerance to VG I can't go higher then 30% or I get problems elsewhere - I learned to live with it and so far I've been off cigs over two years.

Vaping is a learning curve hang in there and I hope it works out for you guys.

In addition to the above very good advice, keep an eye on each other. There is a very nasty bug going around where we are. My daughter got it first, went from a cold to bronchitis and she missed quite a bit of time at work over the holidays. Her boyfriend got it next, not quite as bad but still sick, and now my grandson and I are sneezing and coughing. Keep hydrated, and keep track of your symptoms. If things get worse, it might be time to consult your doctor.

Yes when I first started high pg bothered me. Now I can tolorate it. I also agree with the comment above about dehydration.

As a side note I think your wife will have more success if she uses a liquid with some nicotine in it. I think it is nice that you are vaping with her. It seems like a show of support for her quiting efforts.

I guess it does seem sort of odd to start vaping from a non-smoking point. I actually quite enjoy the act of smoking/vaping. In fact, the day I decided to quit smoking was the day that I first blew an O through an O. I had tried quitting smoking a couple times before with the gum, but I wasn't really THAT motivated to be successful with it (plus, by keeping myself addicted to the nicotine, I never actually stopped craving the smokes). I went cold turkey overnight. I smoked a certain herb when I craved smokes, and I ate a lot of sunflower seeds to help me out. Dropping the herb a couple months later wasn't a big deal at all.

So, I also figure vaping can help me with my constant fidgeting while I'm at my computer desk. I'm also trying to cut down on my sugar consumption; I figure if my hands are busy and I have something sweet, I wont reach for candies and sweets so often. I'm only going to vape nicotine-free juices.

Come to think of it, when I first started vaping I did have a small issue with high VG based juices (70% VG - 30% PG) This didn't last long for me though, maybe 1-3 days if I remember correctly (slight throat irritation) Had no problems with 50% - 50% juices (although my tanks didn't really like it :) Probably because I got into rebuilding fairly immediately and that had a bit of a learning curve in terms of how many coils, what gauge to use for my mod, how much cotton to wick with etc. Soon as I figured that out I was good. Back to my 70% - 30%.

    Hydrate often
    Mouthwash often
    Try different pg/vg blends
Ensure you're not getting burnt hits and burning your wicks (very important for sore throat issues)
Try different flavors (there's a lot more variables that can be irritants in your flavors than pg and vg that often get the bad rep)

Consider changing your techniques. Mouth to lung inhale, inhale through mouth and exhale through nose or mouth only inhales... start with the last one... work your way to the first one... eventually maybe even progress to straight lung inhales.

The less that goes to your wind pipes, the less there is to dry and irritate your throat.

If the wife's headaches persist more than a couple days from the onset, make sure she sees a doctor.

    May your journey prove successful.

I had to ask, why wouldn't a husband/wife share device vaping tips?

I understand the logic in layperson terms to prevent illness amongst children and other visitors, however, this is my husband....and you are contagious as much as 72 hours before initial onset of viral symptoms. Following instructions like that between husband and wife with no said intimacy issues wouldn't prevent anything except a close relationship. Just my 2 cents...
