Sore Throat, Terrible Cough, and What atomizer works best with 100% VG juice?

So glad I found this forum as I am new to vaping and it can be so confusing at times. I have a couple of questions:

- I was smoking a pack a day and weaned off the cigs to vaping over a one week period of time. I now have a terrible sore throat and am constantly coughing. From what I can find on the internet, this sounds like "quitters flu". I'm hoping it's not from vaping, as that's the only way I've been able to quit. Anyone else experience this? It is excruciating and nothing controls the cough.

- I found some organic 100% VG juice that I really like from Velvet Cloud, but the juice is so thick that it is not working well in my CE-5 clearomizer. Does anyone know what would work better with this thick liquid?

Sure would appreciate any help I could get. Thanks so very much for the help! :)

I'm thinking cough candies and water. A little water in your juice, a lot over your lips and cough candies as needed. I had trouble in the beginning as I was using 50/50 pg/vg mixes. Was getting chest tightness so I experimented with the ratios.
At 100% pg now and no looking back.

I think for most folks there is a period of adjustment in the beginning. Try different things and finding what works for you is key though. Congrats on switching and Welcome to ECF.

Hi lkoolsone and welcome to ECF. So, you didn't say weather you have a cold or it's just a sore throat. Also, what is the nicotine level of your juice?

If you have a cold, I suggest you vape less and/or reduce the nic level in the juice. Nicotine is a bit of an irritant which could really bother you with a cold. The high VG is also a good way to go in this case. When I was making 80% VG juice I would add about 6% water to thin it. This does not IMO affect the flavor much at all. You could try adding about 8% to a tank of juice and see if this helps. If it helps, adjust the percentage as needed and get some distilled water if you're going to be doing this for a while.

If it's not a cold it could be just from stopping smoking, or a reaction to something in your juice. Anything could be the culprit, but typically it's PG or a flavoring. I have though also seen people have trouble with VG, the nicotine or the coil wire material. It has sometimes been the amount of an ingredient and sometimes the make.

Hmm... Headaches, too?

Could be a couple of things.

If you are chain-vaping (taking hit after hit very quickly, that can lead to both a sore throat from dry hits (the wicking isn't keeping up with your vaping) and can lead to headaches from the constant muscle effort of the constant sucking.

If you are using the e-cig like a cigarette, meaning you directly inhale, that can also cause sore throat and coughing. Try taking the vapor into your mouth first, then gently inhale.

Too much nic intake can also cause headaches. Probably not in your case, since you are using low nic, but if you are chain-vaping, it might still be too much nic over a short period of time.

What others aid about drinking plenty of water is very good advice. E-Juice takes a lot of water out of your system.

Last, but not least, if your symptoms aren't related to e-cigs, you might want to consult your physician, just to be on the safe side.

Taking in vapor isn't the same as taking in smoke, and your body will take time to get used to the new experience.

Hope this helps, and you soon get to where you can enjoy the vape!

What everyone else said, but yeah 100% VG in that sort of tank is going to be rough -- and 100% VG as a new vaper can be kind of rough on your lungs, too, making them feel extra heavy and if you're already coughing up stuff (and it's that time of year for traditional smokers in the midwest to struggle with their lungs). Aside from the other suggestions, I'd add trying a small bottle of 50/50 and seeing it helps with the symptoms, or not at all -- it'll definitely work better in that tank.

First thing would be to get away from the CE5. If you were having trouble with wicking and continue to use the same tank you are just continuing to irritate yourself with the burnt wicking material. At least switch to a new one or replace the coil if it is that type?

Many on here like protanks there are several different models. Aspire nautilus, mini and several other products have a BVC coil that is pretty good all the way to 70% VG. Beyond that you need to thin with distilled water.

Another thing you could try is .9% saline solution to thin the liquid, many swear by it to soothe a little as well as reduce viscosity. Lots of commercial juices purportedly use it.

I encountered a similar problem about 3 weeks in where I thought I was perhaps allergic to PG. My coil was just burnt.

I seriously don't understand why people in the us have this fixation with high vg anything. Maybe they think this is organic or something but if you do enough research I doubt organic is anything other than a gimmick to make money and charge higher prices. I have been vaping high pg diy juice for for the last three years and haven't had so much as a cold. What is it that I am missing here?

There's definitely a gluten-free vibe in parts of the eliquid world, and yes with VG, but in fairness some people really don't seem to react well to PG, and some just don't want any throat hit and prefer things a bit more moist. Since VG breaks down as a sugar it's naturally more sweet, and if someone sees more vapor they think it's more "premium" even though VG is cheaper to use.

Though in fairness to PG, half the time it is probably a specific flavoring rather than the PG, or someone getting a cold the same time they try an eliquid and someone on a forum then tells them to try something higher in VG, and since it's a different flavor it gets sorted. :p In general it doesn't seem to matter which someone prefers, though in additional fairness to PG, from watching vapers and forums people getting phlegm buildup and a heaviness in the lungs seems more prevalent to me than the amount of people who might have real allergic reactions to PG.
