I recently bought a Sparkplug SP3 mod and this is a dumb question, but which way does the battery go in, or does it matter? It doesn't say and it's not obvious.
Electrons really don't care which way they go in that type of device, there are no electronic components that require a specific polarity.
With the SP3, several have found that they actually work better with the bat upside down. There is even a thread about it on Trogg's website. www.cavecom.com
I don't get what you mean, in that no electronic components require a specific polarity. All things I have ever bought specify which way to put the batteries in, and you must put them in that way or the thing doesn't work.
in the older sp2 models it mattered as it could make the unit fire accidentally however they changed the button pin to be smaller in order to not fire in the event the battery was upside down . Put the nipple (+) end towards the atty always

Something as simple as a resister (heating coil in an atty/carto) doesn't care which way the current flows, it will function the same either way. If you add diodes, transistors, and other electronics then polarity does matter.
A good example would be the Jazz carto pipe where the bottom spring is wired to the center post of the connector, and the top switch makes contact with the outer surface of the connector. (reversed polarity through the carto) If you turn the battery over (normal polarity) the battery cover is apt to only touch the plastic wrap of the battery, and not make contact.
