I just had my first spring collapse on my 2 week old mini :(

I'm blaming the dual coil carto I had just screwed on to revisit carto's. Not going there again. Fortunately I ordered a spare when I bought my mini and grand or I'd be down to one reo till more springs get here.

When I removed the flat spring it was sticky underneath so I gave the inside of the case a good wipe out before I installed the new spring thinking some juice must have gotten under the spring.

Now I am wondering if it may have actually been noalox under there to help make a good electrical contact between the spring and the case.

Advice please!!!

Dave...

I don't remember there being anything sticky under the spring when I replaced it, if it wasn't black/charcoal grey, it wasn't Noalox. I just cleaned the inside of my REO well, and placed the spring. It should be fine.

Thanks for the reply. I put it back clean and it is firing fine. Just wanted to play safe. "If in doubt ask questions."

Thanks Rob and everyone else for the info. Just getting to know my Reo's and the advice here is always quick and helpful. Now to get more backup springs. If I have another collapse now I'll be stuck with a good looking paper weight. :(

Trouble is postage to Australia takes a week or more and cost more than the parts

Dave...

in a pinch you can harvest a spring from a battery box that is avilable at radio shack(if you have them) and it can be soldered onto the existing plate. only use this if you need too and only until you can get a replacement from Rob.

Killed a spring about an hour ago. That's exactly what I just did lol (actually the spring was from an old AM/FM radio). Seems to work ok as a temp fix. Also looks like my button got pretty melted so I heated it up and tried to reshape it w/ some success, but I need to order a replacement button..

Was using AW IMR bat.. Wondering: will one get spring collapses with AW protected bats?

Thanks!

Yes...if the PCB (protection circuit board) fails. If not, then the battery will just stop working. I'm no battery expert, but it is my understanding that if the PCB is tripped, you can stick the battery on the charger and it will reset. Please...battery experts...please clarify this for me. I've never shorted a mod, so I haven't experienced this yet which is why I ask for clarification.

Yes, that is correct; however, since the unprotected IMR's are the safest battery, they are the recommended battery even though it would be easier for Rob if everyone used the protected ones. Unfortunately, PCBs do fail and a runaway li-ion battery is an extraordinarily dangerous thing.

My spring collapsed after installing a new dc carto. I pulled the spring back up and the unit fires, but it feels different than before the collapse. I'm having to press the button down much farther now and I know that isn't right. I use the AW IMR batts. This is my first failure and I was afraid I'd have to send this back for repair, but if I'm reading the thread right, I can just order a new spring?

Do you have a Mini or a Grand? The spring in the aluminum REO's is fairly easy to replace. Be aware that once the spring collapses due to a short the safety feature will not work again. So if you pull it up and continue to use it you no longer have the protection of you battery falling away from the firing point. You just might end up melting your button.
Rob usually has the replacement springs on his site.

PM Rob. It could just be the cartomizer, but there were a few REOs that had a defect in the connection. If you can tell him when it was purchased, or give him the paypal addy that you used, he can tell if it is one of them. If so, he will definitely want to have it back for repairs.

I have the mini reo. I've only used it enough to tell that it wasn't feeling right. I went to the site, but he is out of springs right now. I've removed the battery and the mod is sitting, lonely and sad, on my desk.

Oh, I'm so sorry. He isn't really out of springs. The program requires that he manually add new stock. PM him (redeyedancer) and tell him what is going on. From what you said, he will probably want you to send it in. Even if he doesn't want you to send it in, make sure you tell him that the site shows no springs available.
