A few days ago Karen Blumenfeld sent me a press release sent out by e-cigarette company RivoCig saying that it would be distributing e-cigs in the swag bags at the Golden Globes and encouraging people to "vape" at the ceremonies.
I passed this on to the California Attorney General's office, who contacted the Hollywood Foreign Press Association, sponsor of the Golden Globes. As a result, the Hollywood Foreign Press Association's lawyer sent a cease and desist letter to RivoCig demanding that the company removed all mention of the Golden Globes from its website and press materials.
RivoCig as complied and the HFPA has certified to the Attorney General that there are no tobacco products or e-cigs in the official goody bags, or that will be distributed by the Assn to attendees. The AG's office has also asked the HFPA attorneys for confirmation that they will not allow vaping at the Golden Globes.

Congrats to Karen Blumenfeld and the California Attorney General's office. They've really done great work for public health.

What's especially amusing is that if you read the press release closely, you'll see RivoSig (misspelled by Glantz) actually claimed that they'd be distributing their e-cigs at some random party being held TWO DAYS before the Golden Globes. I do not believe this party is associated with the Foreign Press Association.

So Glantz appears to be claiming victory despite the fact that the "official" gift bags were more likely than not never going to include e-cigarettes.

And this part is disgraceful and adds further evidence that the CA AG's office is fond of bullying

The AG's office has also asked the HFPA attorneys for confirmation that they will not allow vaping at the Golden Globes.

I left this comment on his blog. I'd be very surprised if he allows it to be published.

After smoking for 45 years and being unable to quit despite repeated attempts using the so-called “safe and effective” nicotine cessation medications and methods, I suspect that if I had not switched to e-cigarettes on March 27, 2009, by now I might have needed to drag around an oxygen tank with me. So from my viewpoint, tobacco harm reduction saved my life. Before that, I had just about given up all hope of ever being able to stop lighting up. I'm rather shocked that anyone is opposed to a method for smoking cessation that works so well for so many people. That works to prevent lives from being saved.

It just perplexes me to no end how this e cig thing is being treated like its worse than cigarettes by some people. It seems so immature. It could have gone the other way. It really is about jealousy almost. And control freaking. The world is going out of control so "they" focus a new thing that is tacking off fast and go control freaking. It's like they think vaping is trying to replace smoking so vapers can beat all the cigarette regulations and they are having little fits. Big babies

BINGO That is exactly what they think and they intend to keep us vilified and demonized right along with the smokers they have beaten up on so long.

How dare you try to vape when we got smoking prohibited. How dare you engage in an activity that to us looks like smoking

How dare you make decisions we don't approve of. Ideologue's mindset.

They may resemble babies having a snit fit but they are about as harmless as pit vipers. Ignore them at your peril.

I remember that some years ago there were actually electronic cigarettes in some goody bags, and if I remember correctly that was at the Oscars.
