I need some help with what would be a good starting percentage for saline solution in my mixes. I picked up a can of sterile saline wound wash from CVS yesterday. The reason I chose that particular can is because there are only two ingredients: purified water and .9% sodium chloride. I've read where most people that have been making diy a while use a small amount of saline in their mixes. I've seen solutions mentioned at .03-.09. Mine is .9 What would be a good starting % to add, just to give my juice that little extra something, and help with the dry mouth irritated throat. I am not a 100% vg vaper. I usually make juices anywhere from 50/50 to 70/30 PG/VG. I made three 10ml sample bottles last night(yes I know I should have asked before I made them), I added 1% saline solution. Is that a good place to start or is my juice going to taste like I'm vaping a salt shaker

.9 or .09?

Overall it depends on the type of recipe in my opinion. The current flow will give you slightly lower resistance from the salt even at small levels. What I usually do when using saline is to not use it by itself. I'll like to have a 5% distilled water/saline mix with saline being maybe 1%. The exception is when I do a dessert type flavor, like reeses peanut butter cups, then I won't have distilled water at all.

Everyone is different though, I've heard of people using quite a bit of saline in their mixes, but I taste the salt even at 1-2%. I don't like saline used in fruity flavors, you're better off using distilled water.

Your to high on the PG to add saline. Increase VG to 65% and add 4% saline. This worked for me. I don't taste salt at that concentration but I use medical grade saline and not that wound wash stuff so if you taste salt that may be why.

Danny, this question is for you. Started to pm it but I figured others in the same situation may look at this thread. I tasted one of the juices I made, and I do not taste salt, thank goodness. Raising my vg to 65% is not a problem once I go through the bottle of base I currently have mixed up at 50/50. My question is, you mentioned that you use medical grade saline. What is it called and where can I get it. Also, mine is .9%, what % is the medical grade and do I need to add 4% of it, or 4% of the .9% I currently have? Do you add saline to all your mixes at the same % or do you add a higher amount on desert flavors?

I make my own .9% saline with distilled water and kosher salt. A lot of salt has anti-caking agents in it, and you'll definitely want to avoid that. I add that to my base, and the final juice ends up at 2% saline. I've found 2% to be perfect at preventing dry sinuses for me. My first attempt at using saline was at just over 3%, and it made my nose runny if I was vaping a decent amount.

What percentage is the baxter saline? The wound care I bought has two ingredients. Purified water, and sodium chloride but its .9%

It's .9% Sodium Chloride. The ingredients in your wound care saline sounds OK so if your not getting an off taste then use that.

Last time I checked kosher salt has anticaking agents in its composition. The only pure salt I have found is "pickling salt"; about any food store has it. Name "kosher" does not guarantee purity of the salt.

The kosher salt I have doesn't have any. I didn't mean that as kosher salt is what to use, just stating that's what I could find. Sea salt is also available almost anywhere without anti-caking agents, but I went with kosher over sea.

You're fine. All of the medical variants are 0.9% sodium chloride in purified water -- and sterile. If you're concerned about costs, you can also buy 1G sodium chloride tablets and make your own. I previously used Baxter solution but have switched to the tablets.

Search for "saline" and my user id to find links for the product danny referenced and tablets. There's also photo showing the Baxter medical grade solution. Baxter does labels for several different uses and understand there's one additional mfg.
