I must need new ones, then because I experimented and it doesn't set off mine. Vapor is cool--not smoke--so I don't see how it could unless there are smoke detectors that detect other things besides heat and smoke.
<snip>

Smoke detectors do not detect heat. :) There are 2 types: Both are particulate/occlusion detectors that detect the particulate matter in the air when it reaches a level where it occuldes a "mini photoelectric beam". The other is the ionization type that detects particulates via bonding of particulates to ions- occluding normal circuit connectivity. (Air sampling in clean rooms is a bit more complex but is another way smoke can be detected.)

There are many tales on this and other forums of people vaping in airplane rest rooms and at work without any alarm triggering.

I have tried to set off my home smoke detectors by vaping directly into the device and no alarm was generated. When I smoked analogs I was successful in tripping the alarm. Vapor dissipates much faster than cig smoke.

IMO there is insufficent particulates in vapor to trip these alarms without serious effort.

When I went to Vapefest in Aug. I got there the second night of the festival at around 7 p.m. A couple of a hundred people had been vaping for 2 days at the hotel and when I stepped off the elevator you could not miss the smell of caramel in the air. It made me think that of all the flavors out there, that caramel must be the strongest. Not exactly a scientific experiment, just an observation. :)

I can't wait til I can stealth vape too! One of the reason I want to switch to e-cigs is because I have to hide my smoking from so many people.. some that know I smoke and don't approve and some that really have no clue that I smoke.. Can't tell you how stressful being around these people have been (makes me want to smoke even more!!)
I'm waiting very impatiently for my starter kit to arrive. In the mean time I am obsessively worrying about how successful I'll be at stealth vaping, so I can sneak away to a bathroom or something whenever the need arises.
It's so so good to read that people have been secretly vaping everywhere!!
Now where is that starter kit already!!

Oh, I can't wait to have this problem ...impatiently awaiting the arrival of my first e-cig. I can only imagine what others have been too afraid to tell me about what I smell like, not to mention my whole house.

First, Welcome to ECF! Secondly, my kids have an Aunt Lala!!! Aunt Lalas are extra special!!!
Congrats to you!!! I hope that you enjoy vaping as much as we do!!! I think that the quest for the perfect juice is the most fun/frustrating part of vaping--not being smelly is my most favorite side effect! Good luck to you!!!

Oh, we all get that nasty shock after we start vaping!

When I quit smoking cold turkey I still loved the smell of cigarettes, that's part of what made it harder. Also, when I quit analogs they tasted so good when I would break down and have one. Now they taste like licking an ashtray and even though I have cravings, just smoking one is disgusting in reality. Walking into my mother's house, which is always so clean is a total shocker because it smells to me like something has died because two smokers live there.

I really think it is something about vaping that makes me sensitive to the smell of cigarettes now, because when I quit before it didn't smell that bad to me.

Anyone else have that experience? And why oh why after more than two months of vaping are my cravings for analogs getting stronger. I know they taste horrid and vaping is so good. EWwwwh

Yes! When I got pregnant with my twins, I quit cold turkey. I loved the smell and longed for it, actually, so I used to sniff my husband all the time. Eww. lol Now, I hate it. It's very strange! The only time he smokes in the house any more is one at night when he goes to bed and I can instantly smell it when I'm downstairs and I have to hold my tongue. :) He's good, though.

I usually vap spearmint and watermelon. Everyone that asks me about the ecig never can smell anything. I purposely vape and send some their way and they are amazed that there is no smell. Perhaps you have oil based flavors??? I buy my juices from www.freedomsmokeusa.com
My stealth vape locations: cars, my bed, work place and even the NYC Subway.
I love the ecig

Once you start vaping, I think you'll find that if you've ever smoked within half an hour of being around these people... they knew you smoked. You will be AMAZED at how powerful that smell is, and there's no way they don't know what's up.

I'm not trying to be rude or anything, but I suspect they're not saying anything out of respect for the fact that you don't smoke around them.

I'm actually starting to wonder if vaping somehow makes us more sensitive to cigarette smoke/smell, but truly that smell is strong... stronger even than you might have thought before you started smoking.
