I know about "budget"...

Check out your local "thrift stores". Yesterday, I saw 3 different crock pots for under $5 ea. I bought a small new one at Walmart for $10.00.

I also found a good (mid range - 3 min timer) UC for $5. I also became the proud owner of a like new food dehydrator for $4.00 (not all yesterday...).

Thanks to the OP for these mammoth threads. I picked up the little HF model today and mixed a fresh batch of custard in a 10ml test vial. After pushing buttons for an hour (3 minute timer) I rigged up a small clamp with a plastic fork to put pressure on the switch and connected the whole thing to a $2 hardware store outlet timer I had been using on the crock pot, half hour on/off, to try and control water temp (even with the lid cracked) and keep the motor from destroying itself. I should be done with a 3.5-4.0 hours on cycle by the time I bring my wife home and she asks WHAT THE HELL IS THAT ANNOYING BUZZING SOUND? Hopefully the results will be worth it.

I started with that one, too. It worked just fine.

Also, like you, I "jumped" the button. Mine lasted about a week - but, you seem smarter than me since you added the wall timer. I just let mine run...(not good).

If you want to test the effectiveness of the unit, stick a (2"x 2") piece of aluminum foil in the water for a few minutes and see how long it takes for the foil to start "pitting". After a short while, the foil will develop small holes. That's good. That means it is still working...

That buzzing sound is the transducer of the unit "making waves". Annoying as heck, but good.

That's the one I've been using for over a year.
It has steeped gallons of juice so far and it's still in excellent condition.
One of the most productive $30 I've EVER spent :thumb:
 
Custard right out of the bath (simple mix, 7.5% custard, 2.5% "new" butyric acid custard/gelato, 2% dulce) was cured but not really matured. Put it away for the night. Today it's smoother; I think 4 hours cavitation and 2-3 days rest seems to be key, which is way better than 4-5 weeks of wondering what I just made.

Gonna try it with some different concentrations and an 11-fruit mix I like a lot but takes time to meld.

This is really useful for diagnosing a problem I'm having as a new DIYer where fresh mixes taste perfumey, then they taste great, and then they seem to mute down into colored glycerol using a hot bath and dark curing. Very frustrating.

Edit: Also great for cheapskates who need to clean out syringes like me.

That's not uncommon. I often find after a UC steep the mix needs to sit 1 or 2 days to reach full maturity.

Wow! I just finished reading through the whole thread, 44 pages yesterday, the rest today, massive thread on how steeping has evolved and how to use your own judgment to find your right or more convenient way to do it.
I just wanted to say thanks to all you guys and gals that made this thread what it is today, it saves people like me frustration, time, and failed experimentation, and course, money.
I was about to get a UC cleaner yesterday, in fact I lost the auction for one on eBay, but today I feel that CP is the way to go for me, just set it and let it do its thing, plus I can use it for more things at home than the SC.
Not to mention that a SC with buttons and numbers, water and buzzing sound is a child magnet, or at least to both of my daughter's, and I wouldn't want them near this stuff at all.

Just one question, can I place the glass bottles directly over the bottom of the CP? Or should I add something at the bottom thay allows the hot water to circle underneath them?

One thing went through my mind the whole thread, I do understand that nic will oxidize at contact with air and heat will help to do so, since all natural steeped juices will eventually oxidize, why not add more air to the steeping process? Something like a fish tank pump blowing air trough a pippete while in the UC or CP with another pippete to allow for air/pressure release? Probably the rest of the flavors could benefit from it as well?

I know it sound complicated, it probably is, but I find it intriguing. Maybe someone else can shed some light to it?

Whats the temp & time you are all mostly using?

i bought a ultracleaner for cleaning my mods but i can set the time from 1-99 mins & i think the temp go's to 80celcius, so i might aswell see what all the fuss is about with this speed steeping :)

alsoo, if you had uc filled with water and had a cup heavy enough sat in the middle that it doesnt start to float and you put a bottle of juice in the middle of that cup, i presume the uc would still penetrate the bottle but maybe a bit of a weaker pulse?

Put the bottle containing the mix directly into the water don't use a cup. The water is what carry the waves.

Tobaccos

150F 3 - 5 hours

deserts

150F 2 - 4 hours

Fruits and candies

150F 1 - 2 hours

Let them rest for a day or so after steeping and your good.

The recommended steep times are usually calculated with a full bottle but your milage may vari. Also heat seems to oxidize faster then air so it may just be a mute point.

It's OK to let the bottle of mix sit on the CP floor. As far as adding more air into the bottle it may cause a faster oxidation then what would be needed during the steeping process. So it may shorten the time or it may produce bad results if you miss calculate the time. On the other hand heat oxidizes nic faster then air so putting extra air in the bottle may just be a moot point for the short amount of time the mix steeps.

Hi Danny, thanks for answering back! Yeah, I know its kind of far stretched, but I will try it out at some point, I am interested in that result mostly because along the whole thread I only saw that people said that even if the juice was already perfectly steeped after a few hours on the UC, the color wasn't as dark, (because not enough oxidation has happened I will assume) and even after that, the next step is let it rest for a while hours/2 days.

Again, what I assume at that last step is the actual incorporation of more air into the mix, or some other compound leaving the mixed juice.

Anyways, I don't see what a little testing could hurt anything, at worst I could have a little batch over oxidized or non vapable, and on the other hand, it could improve a bit on the final steeping.

I don't have a UC atm, maybe I will, or maybe I will go the CP way, but I will try this out eventually.

BTW Danny, I would love to read your blog, but I cannot make myself dig into the whole thread to find the links after all the reading I did last night, could you be so kind to post them again or send me a pm with them?

Testing and experimentation is a good thing so do lots of it. It's what helps you learn what will and won't work for you.
