Meh, boil if you want, but I'm not one to mess with that. I boiled my first couple cotton balls, then grew real tired of that immediately. Now, if one's going to use yarns or thread type fibers, boiling would be a wise choice. Yarns will have "fabric sizing" sprayed on to add "body and stiffness" to the fibers. No one needs that on their wick, and it can even adversely affect the absorbancy of the cotton (or hemp, or bamboo, etc.).

Thanks!
I didn't think it would need boiled but I just wanted to make sure.

I used to use the CVS sterile cotton. I keep getting some throat irritation and the first 15-20 hits always had a hint of band-aid flavor which I perceive to be a result of whatever it has been "bleached" white with. Just because it is labeled "sterile" doesn't mean chemical free. Just sayin'.

I switched to unbleached organic ("100% cotton that has not been chemically treated, bleached or pigmented. Raised without the use of chemical fertilizer or pesticides to ensure pure, safe quality")cotton several months ago and have not had any issues with throat irritation nor odd flavor from the cotton. I don't feel the need to boil this cotton. YMMV....ya'll.:)

That's a really good point. Choice of cotton (yarn, wool balls, qtips, sterile, organic, etc.) REALLY is a YMMV. I don't mind my "whatever this is made from or what's been done to it" standard cotton ball, non-boiled. My brother, however, can only use organic, like you. I KNOW what sterile rolls smell like (that BAND-aid smell, yuck), and know for me, that is not a suitable choice.

However, next cotton ball purchase, I may just grab the organic/unbleached bag, just because it makes better sense for me. I say everyone needs to try out different sources, and decide which tastes best to them. All cotton is not "created" equal, right?

What brand of cotton and where do you get it?
I noticed my throat gets irritated a bit also.

This is what I use. This link shows 162 pads but you can find it in the 60 quantity if you google. But do read the product details description in the link. Pretty cool stuff.

Amazon.com: Koh Gen Do Pure Cotton - 162 Pads: Beauty

Yikes, those are pricy! These are on my shopping list (they're at my local Target or Walgreen's, can't remember but I saw them the other day at one of those): Amazon.com: Swisspers Organic Triple Size Cotton Balls -- 80 Balls: Beauty

They are completely different and I feel worth the price. when I use cotton this what I use. The box of 60 will last a long time. You cut them in perfect size strips and get about 20 maybe more wicks per pad. Pure Cotton - Koh Gen Do | Sephora
