Look, they have their patented method of control.
"It's for the children"
Want to have Prohibition without actually saying that's what you want? Easy.
"Drunk Driving isn't just a danger to the drunk, it kills children. Likely on school buses. Let's pass a law!"
We'll start at 0.015 then gradually ratchet down to where nobody is going to risk having a beer with their pizza.
Cigarettes? "Smoking costs society by paying for medical care." Not much uptake, hmmm.
"Smoking causes secondhand injury, pass laws!" Bingo! "You filthy smokers should just stop."
This isn't about money, though many are willing to see it that way. It's about control. Moralizing do-gooders. Some is financial, like the Cancer Society, Heart Association, American Lung Association, etc. I don't believe there are payoffs from 'Big Tobacco" Just those three 'charities' take in more than the cigarette companies in the US. Donations, federal and state money. There's BIG money to be made from 'charity'. Ever follow what happens to that blood you donate to save a life? Yep, Red Cross has shiny buildings, large salaries, and charges for the blood you donate.
If they are SO against health robbing items that affect 'The Children', let's tackle the obesity epidemic. "What!? Take my chips and dip away!?" That'll never happen, though waddling kiddies are a MUCH larger (ha!) problem than any of their temperance crusade issues.
Moral? Focus on those who cause you harm.
