I am not a smoker, but bought my dad all the ecig stuff to help him stop. He has been smoking for about 50yrs. He is using the ecig everyday but still sneaking in a cigarette here and there. Even when using the ecig he still would rather a cigarette. He has been vaping consistently now for close to a month. Has a few different flavors that he says are okay. He has a halo triton and I just bought him a aspire k1 with vv battery.

He still coughs on the ecig using vg e juice.

Does the want for a cigarette ever go away?

Thanks
Wayne

It depends on the user, vaping has about a 20% success rate so only 1 in 5 will stop smoking totally, but think about the fags he doesn't smoke and not about the ones he does. His set up might not be the best for his needs so try and talk to him and find out what is good and bad about vaping, maybe you can get him the right set up for him.
Coughing might be too much nic, what is he using? Why VG juice and not a PG/VG mix?

I have been trying with my mother for a year! But she she has smoked for over 40 years. I keep all her equipment maintained and cleaned and all she has to do is plugt in her MVP. But she just won't quit buying more cigs.

I do think however that she is smoking a lot less so that is one good thing.

aw, he's giving it a shot - fair play to him. Dual fueling for a while isnt a biggie, so dont make an issue I'd say?

As for the coughing, vaping is a very different style of inhaling to a cigarette so you may need to explain more about the mouth to lung inhale and a slow inhale, in comparison to a swift drag on a ciggie!

I've been vaping over a year and I have to admit I'd quite like a cigarette... I just choose not to :) I remind myself of the pluses to vaping and they outweigh being addicted to smoking 1000% but its still willpower and enthusiasm, and i'm sure once he finds some eliquids he really likes it'll be a step in teh right direction.

Good luck and well done that Dad!

Is he vaping VG because he has a sensitivity to PG? I can't vape liquids high in VG since they make my chest feel heavy and congested. He might also be coughing due to having smoked for so long. It could be the flavors too. I smoked for 40 years and while most juices don't bother me, there are a couple that make me choke.

Another idea is to try WTA (Whole Tobacco Alkaloids). Some people are addicted to ingredients in cigarette in addition to nicotine. There more information on WTA here: http://www.e-cigarette-forum.com/fo...bacco-alkaloid-wta-faq-info-aroma-ejuice.html

I've been vaping just over a month after a 21+ year smoking habit and still have those days where if I pass another tobacco store I might break. But I was having so many health related issues I just chain vape my face off to get through those times, 50 years is a long time and at the time he has in vaping that is normal to still want a smoke. Also high VG makes my chest tight and need my inhaler if I vape it too long try to get some 50/50 and see if that helps with the coughing/chest tightness.

I wish you and him the best, it's really cool you're trying to help your Dad make a change for the better. But if he slips a few times just work with him instead of against and eventually it might take on.

I still smoke. I'll quit for a few weeks And the. I'll smoke And vape.

My best luck has been with the wta from aroma. I love the vanilla splash. I ran out. Started smoking again. Finally I have some more on the way. I will try hRded to not run out again. The wta feels more like a cigarette then regular ejuice.

I also have some 510 Atties in routes. The coils and rebuilding is just too much for me lately.

I was a 25-30 year smoker. I had tried to quit a bunch of times as most smokers have.
I started with the Blu brand (3-5 months) and have moved up the ladder to better equipment. (but did sneak a few here and there at first)
One thing you can't do is "make" someone quit....they need to want to.
I'm just over a year into vapeing and can say that a regular cigarette turns my stomach....can't believe I used to stink like that.

Give him encouragement and let him know one here and there won't hurt....but to try and space them out further and further each few days to a week until he can go a day or more without an analog.

I can honestly say that the fruit flavors helped me to forget about analogs.

Lets' recap: 50 years of smoking, 1 month of vaping.

The cravings and habits that go along with a half century of smoking don't disappear overnight, not for most of us switching to vaping. There is a lot of crap you get from smoking that your body has become addicted to that vaping does not replace. This isn't simply a matter of replacing nicotine with nicotine.

I was a 30 year 2 PAD smoker and I continued to smoke here and there in my first three months of vaping. Some people need that while they are figuring out the most basic things - like how to inhale when vaping, getting used to the gear, and adjusting nic levels and flavors into the best zone to deal with the cravings

The coughing could be a lot of things. 50 years of smoking isn't something your body gets past overnight. When you throw something different at it while the lungs are clearing out it can be kind of an insult to injury thing. If he is vaping the same way he smoked - taking deep lung inhales - a lot of people can't handle that when they begin. Tell him to "vape it like a cigar" instead while he is adjusting. Pull the vapor into the mouth and back of the throat and... stop. Exhaling through the nose may give him a better "feel" in the experience too. You don't get the majority of your nicotine from vaping in the lungs anyway. Rather in the linings in the oral cavity - same as with the Nic-O-Gum. See here. => http://www.e-cigarette-forum.com/forum/ecf-library/337017-inhalation-technique-e-cigarette.html

I was a pack a day smoker for 20 years, and when I started vaping, I spent 2 months as a dual user. It took some time to get used to using an ecig, and it took a specific effort to just stop smoking cigarettes.

He still coughs on the ecig using vg e juice.

It takes time for lungs to become acclimated to vaping. It also takes time to clear the lungs of all the "gunk" that is built up, and vaping does force some of that out.

Does the want for a cigarette ever go away?

No. Once a smoker, always a smoker. There is a big difference between an ex-smoker and a non-smoker. Ex-smokers can never be non-smokers. It's a lifelong addiction. The urge to smoke will always be there, but as time passes, the urges become shorter and easier to deal with. There will always be triggers in life that bring back that urge (such as watching an episode of Mad Men :vapor:) but with ecigs, it is just that much easier to deal with them.

Best advice I can give you is to go easy on your Dad if he does slip every now and then. Be supportive of any improvements he makes, no matter how small, and NEVER chastise or judge him for slipping. You have given him the best tool for quitting possible, but it is up to him alone to stop smoking completely. Just be sure to tell him that you love him, and that you only want him to be around as long as possible. Knowing that should be enough to get him to stop once and for all.

Don't be afraid to send your Dad over here to ECF. It might help to see that there is a huge community of individuals who are in the same position.

No matter what, I wish you and your father nothing but the very best. Good luck! :D

Here are some tips that helps me:

1) tobacco e-liquid (good tobacco e-liquid)

2) finding the right nic level of your e-liquid to help fend off cravings

3) I have always had to keep a pack of cigs around as a security blanket (even when I am vaping 100%). If anyone else does this as well I would suggest not keeping your old favorite brand on hand. If you (he) were used to premium smokes, then buy some nasty ultra cheapies. If you (he) were used to cheapies, buy roll ups. If you (he) where used to roll ups, buy menthol (or vise versa), etc. You can't keep your old favorites on hand and expect not to slip sooner or later.

Don't be too hard on him or yourself. If he is down to only sneaking one in here or there, then he is doing great! You are a great son for taking the time and effort to help him tackle this addiction.

Get him some different nic levels. I have some 6mg that I vape all day (pacifier mode, as my brother calls it lol), some 12 that I use when I start getting a craving, and then some 18 and 24mg tobacco flavor juice that I use when I REALLY want a cig. Granted the higher nic makes me choke sometimes, but if I inhale mouth to lungs its a lot easier on me.

That being said, 50 years is a long time. Dont expect that habit to break overnight.

I smoked for 43 years and was desperate to quit. It still took me something like 5 ½ months to get off the cigarettes completely. And yeah, I coughed when I vaped and then turned around and coughed when I smoked. Fun time. For me it was finally going up to 24mg eliquid that got me off the cigarettes completely. I was lucky I found a flavor, coffee, that I liked. It’s got to be really hard to quit using something you don’t like the taste of.

Was it his idea to vape or yours? You can lead a horse to water and all that rot. I know all about it, I used to be owned by a stubborn horse.

There is a great saying around ECF: It’s not the cigarettes you do smoke that we count, it’s the ones you don’t. It sounds like your father is doing a bang up job with stuff he’s not particularly fond of. Drag his little self off to a decent vape shop with a tasting bar where he can try different juices. He may find one he loves or just a flavor or two that he likes but that particular brand isn’t quite spot on for him. It will at least give you both a direction to go in. A warning though, if he does quit smoking, his tastes will change as his taste buds recover. Happens to the best of us.

Finding what equipment, juice, drip tip, whatever, is a very individual thing. There are those pesky individuals that take a hit off an ecig and never smoke again. Most of us aren’t that gullible and insist on hanging with our old trusty buddy the cigarette for as long as possible. As The Ocelot said here http://www.e-cigarette-forum.com/fo...625273-still-want-cigarette.html#post14648335 , for some it’s more than just the nicotine in a cigarette. That’s well worth looking into.

Good on you for trying to help him but please remember it won’t be an overnight change. There is a lot more going on than just sucking on dead plant material. More than anything else, he needs you to have patience and understanding (something I think you do have). The tobacco companies have spent billions engineering cigarettes to become extremely addictive. With the right tools, help and understanding he can beat them too, but only if he wants to. If you can get him to, have him read this thread. We’re all pulling for both of you. A lot of good information and support on this forum. I wish you both the best of luck.

What they all said! lol Seriously though, just a couple things to add/emphasize.

First, you are doing such a wonderful thing and God bless you for trying to help him. He really is doing fantastic if he's only sneaking some now and then. Hopefully he doesn't really feel like he has to sneak them. I would caution you to not fall into a trap of feeling like you're putting up all this effort, and not getting the results YOU want.

When I started vaping, I quit smoking. Didn't really intend to do it that way, but while playing with my goodies, realized I hadn't had a cig in 4 hrs and was too stubborn to give up those 4 hrs. lol  I shouldn't have done it that way, made it much harder on myself. Took me nearly a year to find the type of juice holder, juice, and nic that kept me from craving cigs. I also had to go up to 24 mg nic before the constant wanting a cig went away. I smoked about 1.5 pks/day for 36 years.

If he's feeling guilty over those few cigs that can also be detrimental, because you focus on the failure rather than the success. I forget who said it, but definitely talk to him about what he likes and dislikes about vaping vs cigs, and when the cig cravings are the greatest. Good luck and best wishes for you both. Just be patient, and totally focus on the ones he's NOT smoking!

It was my idea for him to vape. I tried to get him to in the past with the V2 ecig no luck. I work as a physical therapist in a nursing home and had a few patients tell me their surgeon said they need to quit smoking or switch to vaping or no surgery because if they smoked the risk was to high. With that I was sold on vaping... and needed somehow for my dad to stop hacking to the point where we all think he is going to die right there!
