For some reason I can't get my DUD to perform well :(

The wick is 400 SS with a very small hole through it, not touching the bottom of the tank. Not sure about its diameter -- it's not tight in the wick hole, and the mesh was about 1 inch wide before I rolled it.

Coil is 2.2 ohm 32gauge kanthal, no shorts, no hotspots (finally).

Airhole is lined up with the wick. I ended up drilling it out too big for my taste, so I temporarily covered half of it with tape.

The filling hole is closed to reduce leaking. Should not affect my results, since the wick is nice and wet anyway.

Throat hit is good. Not too much, just right. The amount of flavor is noticeably small compared to a stock vivi nova or a phoenix rba with SS coil, about same as a carto. Amount of vapor is pitiful. Very pitiful. About half or even one third of the phoenix.

I tried monkeying with the airhole, removing the tape and covering it with my finger to try different sizes, result is about the same.

Any ideas?

Thank you!

If I'm using mine sometimes vapor is crap. I always end up just hitting it harder and that gets more air on the coil.

The absolute biggest thing that cuts vapor for me is if my wick is too wet. If your wick is wicking well try not to tip it too much and let some of that juice back in the reservoir. That should help

the mesh might be a little loose. i use 400/500 with 1 3/4 to 2 inch width. you can keep rolling/tightening the wick after each oxidizing and juice burn...

with fill hole plugged, you'll need to "help" the wicking by draging without supplying the power, in-between vapes. it takes a bit to get use to. clear tanks help a lot as air bubbles are visible - so you know how much juice went into the wick.

i have all my genesis (fast growing into dozens) filling hole plugged, inside pocket and under the pillow they go, no problem with chain vaping too.

alternatively, you can leave the fill hole open - it'll leak. see if it works for you better.

I just got a couple of DUDs to try out. Luckily on my first try I got a good coil and Wick....no shorts or hot spots. My coils is 1.9ohms. BUt I am having similar problems as you. Even at higher voltages I get decent taste but the throat hit and vapor production are about half of my ego-C. It produces a lot of vapor but the vapor isn't nearly as dense as the ego-c...it is very airy. Since I have two DUDs. I set up one of them with the larger airhole of 1.5mm and the other one is smaller at 1mm. Even with the smaller airhole and very tight draw I am not getting nice thick vapor I am used to with the ego-c.

I figured maybe it is the way SS wicks work. SO I set up one of the duds using silica wick. That definitely improved the throat hit but I am still not getting the heavy dense vapor that I like. Not sure what I am doing wrong....

SS works extremely well if rolled very tight with enough room on the sides to provide good air flow. The wick should not be snug in the wick hole. Also I boiled mine after torching to get rid of metallic taste. I use 400 ss mesh torched heavily then check with multimeter for continuity. It should not conduct electricity whatsoever. Anyway, this works for me. Hope it helps.

Thanks for the input. What I am noticing is that there is a long break in period....when I vaped again yesterday on the DUD I noticed the vapor was getting thicker and thicker and taste was getting better and better. The next wick I make I will do it per your instructions and see if it works out better for me.

As you have noted, it takes about a tank or so to break in a new setup, but something else that will affect the vapor production is leaving out the fill screw, my Dud produces fair vapor with it in, but clouds up the house with it out. It does affect airflow, more or less so depending on your wick. Again, this is just my finding with my setup, you may or may not notice much of a difference, but it sure makes my Dud more enjoyable. I just put the screw back in when I'm not going to use it.
