What I read was that the government isn't necessarily as worried about the financial loss. What really concerns them is that the identity of American intelligence agents abroad could be disclosed since their information would be contained in the stolen data since they received federal paychecks.

People with the highest level security clearances were exposed, including my mother. I just, I don't even know. It's hard to feel safe anymore. Did anyone see on the news where they remotely hacked a Jeep while someone was driving it?

Yup I saw that (although from what I gather the person in the Jeep was perfectly aware they were going to do it, it was for a news piece so he was a willing subject in this case), but Chrysler/Jeep came out with a software update soon after that owners can download to a USB stick and apply themselves or go into their Chrysler/Jeep dealer and have them do it. Never the less as much as I've seen/read/heard about hacking computers, this takes it to a new level that can kill people. When you think about those people out there that go to movie theaters and kill many people, or the kids that bring guns to school and kill all their classmates etc. Now they'll be able to kill just as many people by hacking into "connected" cars that are barreling down the highway at 80mph. I'm not sure why auto manufacturers would think that they could put people in danger by having their cars that are connected when the computers in industry / retail that are "connected" are hacked all the time, difference being in retail hacking they get credit card info, and in the case of a connected car they could kill tens of people in one go by simply pressing the brakes remotely while the car is screaming down the highway.

I wanted to get one of the Tesla cars but they are super connected and now I'm really not so sure anymore.

With terrorists, it will become a whole new ball game. The terrorists will invest heavily in things such as this (hacking connected vehicles) and won't even need to leave their home countries to kill dozens of people on trains, planes, and in our own cars.

Personally, I think that Chrysler/Jeep should have issued a national recall for this issue to ensure that every one of their hackable Jeeps gets updated and doesn't rely on customers to do it themselves.

They don't receive paychecks like other government workers...

In case your interested, you can check how strong your password is at How Strong is Your Password?
But do as they say and use some sort of alternative to any real password that you use, something similar to see just how strong they tell you it is.

Oh and the weakest password that I used to (USE TO) use on all non important sites it tells me:
It would take about 10.4773 seconds to crack your password.

This will be all moot in a very short period of time.

The obvious has been missed. The OP is a vaper and his card was used to buy vape gear. No identity theft involved, loans taken out or credit cards issued. It is clear it was someone the OP knows, his computer has been compromised, or it was a shady B&M or online vape shop...

Did you read my posts? Nowhere did I say I used this card was used for purchasing vape gear. Please take a second and actually read the thread.

Yes you did...

"One of these charges was to a SouthBeachSmoke dot com... When I went to the mailbox today, there was a package... It was from the above site, two starter kits (cigalike style) and two packages of 12mg/mL Citrus Cream cartridges and two packages of 18mg/mL cartridges of the same flavor."

I think what Steve was simply trying to point out that it would be a strange coincidence that your card gets compromised in the OPM hack and is used to buy vape gear, being that you are a vaper.

It seems more likely that if nothing else, your card may have been compromised at a vape shop. Same things happen at restaurants all the time, which is why I never hand a card over to the waiter/waitress.

Same. I just hop out the bathroom window, way easier on my wallet.

But seriously, how do you pay for meals without handing your credit card over? Do you walk over to the POS (point of sales, not.. y'know) and swipe it yourself?

You misunderstood... What I meant is I never used the card to buy vape gear. All you guys know is what I have told you, this was only one of the over $1000 spent in one day. You really think that was the only charge? I created this thread to tell what happened with one single charge, not to debate where the hack came from. I will quote my own posts for you just for an idea of my spending habits:

I live at home with mom. Card was only used for food and groceries. I use PayPal for all online purchases and my credit card is not stored there. For gas, I only pay with cash because I live a dollar at a time and I've heard of the vulnerabilities at the gas station pumps.

Never used it on my computer. The government breach got access to social security numbers, clearance levels, credit scores, everything. In order to have a security clearance, you have to divulge everything.

As an update, this person really slipped up. I called South Beach Smoke today and they put their own email and phone number into the system. Now this really is starting to feel like the movie 'Identity Thief.'

All vape shops purchases have been with cash and I never even gave them an email for the receipt.

If an online store does not accept PayPal then I do not shop there.

I know this is a direct result of the government hack because I do not expose myself otherwise. My mothers employer is now involved and has offered 5 years of free credit monitoring to everyone exposed on her clearance papers.

There are plenty of other things going on right now with both my mom and I to warrant more than a simple credit card breach.

But again, this is not why I created this thread and more information than I ever wanted any of you to know.

The US mint makes this greenish paper stuff, cash I believe it is referred to.

Seriously though, I just take whatever cash I will need with me when I go to bars or restaurants.

I mean I figured you might use cash, it just seems like a bit of work.

Although, when I go out drinking, it'd probably be better on my bank account (and my liver) to not open up a bottomless tab.

You know what they do in Europe is bring a hand held card reader and you swipe the card there at the table, so the server or cashier never handles the credit card...
