so my buddy didn't like his mech mod and like my vamo better I switched over to mechs and am vaping at .9 ohms we switched mods idk what his is but its running a trustfire 18500 battery and wont fire my dripper. the battery it self claims to be a high drain battery so my question is why wont it fire with a .9 ohm coil

Any battery which has the name "fire" in it is a poor quality battery (Trustfire, Surefire, Ultrafire). Get some better batteries. An AW 18490 IMR battery would be the best choice.

Battery Basics for Mods: IMR or Protected?

I don't know the amp rating of a Trustfire 18500 IMR, but most batteries in this size have a 8.8 amp continuous discharge rate. A 0.9 ohm coil will pull 5.2 amps from a battery, so a high quality battery should be able to handle this. Ohm's Law Calculator

You don't want to use protected ICR batteries with an RBA/RDA. They do not have the "high drain" capacity required that an IMR battery has. Also, IMR batteries are safer chemistry than a protected battery, so they are a better choice all around.

Please don't let the battery get below 2 volts....ever.
Good head room is around 3.4v (under load, particularly with sub-ohm setups...voltage is substantially lower).

Over drain on an Ion battery can cause it to reverse polarize...hopefully at worst it won't take a charge any more if this happens...but it's possible it could vent (very hot...dangerious).

Check the battery often...
If going sub-ohm...consider dividing its number of charge cycles in half, possibly overkill, but better safe than sorry.

Consider using a current fuse.

For all day vaping without having to think much about it, consider a Kick 2 button. That'll offer some 'vape it till it quits' battery protection, and will also allow you to 'fine tune' the wattage to your coils.

The Kick 2 is a really nice option for what I call 'pacifier PV use'...where sub-ohm raw mech use without the kick is more for 'I need a big and ultra fast nicotine dose'. A Kick would really come in handy if you don't always require massive clouds of eye watering vapor.

ok so for mechs I should be using unprotected batteries?

IMR High Drain...please buy from a reputable PV shop to avoid (counterfeits).

That's the most dangerous thing about these types of batteries...there are lots of mislabled counterfeits out there...so buy from someplace responsible, that regularly deals with batteries that'll be in your face.

See Baditudes link above...a great read about PV batteries.

I have a pet peeve with the word "un-protected" because it can mean two different things.

IMR and hybrid batteries are indeed "un-protected", but the more correct descriptive term is "safe chemistry" or even "high drain".

There are ICR batteries (the same chemistry as protected ICR) which are also available as un-protected (used for flashlights or laptops) which should NEVER be used in a mod.

Stick with the brand-name batteries which are in my blog, paying attention to the model numbers, and you will be safe and good to go.
