Not dissing all sub ohmers, but just go on YouTube and have a look. My impression is that most of them showing their sub ohm setups are just showing off.
"Hey! Look at the massive vapour I'm getting!"
Again I would like to reiterate that not all sub ohmers are like that. Some find that it gives them a better flavour/vape.

By all means, go ahead and try out sub ohms. But first, try out a normal coil or micro coil before going sub ohm. Then and only then will you be able to see if there is any difference in the vape quality for you.

@UncleChuck; agree to a point; there's a lot of talking points that add up to an easy target for put downs... without even trying it. (safely)

1. as 4 yr vaper, I questioned sub ohm vaping because anything below 1.5 ohms was crazy in the context of conventional vaping... you'd surely burn the juice, not to mention safety issues.

Exactly. That was my thought as well. When I was still into cartotanks 10 watts was my sweet spot. Any higher than the vape got harsh, way to hot, and would cause off flavors with certain juices. I'd see some people talking about vaping at 20 watts, and I was dumbfounded. When something confuses the heck out of me I don't go around bashing people because of it. I take it as a chance to learn. And learn I did, the very simple concept that you can buy wire other than 34ga nichrome, which allows you to vape into power levels previously thought impossible while still having smooth, appropriate temperature vapor, with awesome flavor. Then I got it, and now nothing compares (well, except micro coils, or a pair of dual coil cartos with stacked batteries, cartos loose horribly on flavor though)

If someone just simply doesn't like that much power, that's a personal preference issue and I totally understand. But people who are ignorant of what goes into a proper subohm build and go around acting high and mighty because they vape "standard" resistance is totally ridiculous. I've read more than a few posts from people on ECF saying things similar to:

"subohm is stupid, you are going to burn your juice and get a harsh vape"

"subohm is super duper dangerous guys, I'm super cereal!" (I think this poster's name was Al, didn't catch a last name)

"subohm vapers have small peenys" Really?

Just a small sample of the ridiculousness. I've yet to see people going around calling people out for using cartos or clearos and telling them their stuff is junk and they should get into subohm vaping. I'm sure a few misguided people have suggested such things, but it's not nearly as common as the constant subohm bashing that goes on around here. To those people I say grow up and educate yourself.

I went through nearly this exact progression. When you see people posting subohm cloud videos your initial reaction is to think, are these people for real or what? Is this really something different or are these people just recklessly burning juice to act hardcore? I was all ready to pronounce it BS ... but I don't ever do that without being sure first, so I tried it out.

You learn real quick that there are a ton of misconceptions surrounding it and it is a pretty useful learning experience.

I think if people were inhaling those massive clouds of burning juice, they wouldn't be acting, they WOULD be pretty damn hardcore ;)

I can't remember what my first rebuildable was, but I remember building a 1.5ohm or so coil with the included wick and wire and thinking that the flavor was definitely better than cartos, but overall performance was kind of disappointing after reading so many positive things about rebuildables. I was using it on a VV device and had it pumped up as high as it could go (with a single battery) and it really didn't strike me as any better than a carto at 10watts.

So I went searching for info in the RBA section, assuming I was doing something wrong, and saw people talk about subohm coils. I pulled my smoktech bolt out of retirement and built a .8ohm coil or something around there with some 28ga wire. Took the first vape, and after I exhaled my mouth hung open in amazement as I finally understood the obsession with mechs and rebuildables (and more specifically sub ohm vaping)

Worst day of my life, my bank account has been sending me nasty letters ever since.

Wow, I guess it is inevitable that SOME newbs would be seeing those massive clouds vids and go; that's what I want... But I don't think we're there yet (not the norm; perhaps among the younger newb crowd).

I've been saying to the newbs, learn on conventional gear and then try sub ohms, and of course learn about safety... but i want to say to vets that knock sub ohm'ing; "try it first, then see what you say".

We can learn a lot for those "Cloud makers". Sure they're showing off! They know their stuff, and yes, they are not your usual sub ohms vapers. In fact most of those dudes aren't ECF'ers. (a younger crowd and i'd wager you'd get more accidents in that arena).

IMO cloud making is a spin-off from original Genesis sub ohms vaping, which triggered RDA's ...they usually use sub ohms dripper RDA's; w/ dual or quad coils, fat wire, and expanded air holes. It's turned into like a sport; who can get the most vapor... they use lots of VG and very very low nic.
I'll bet some even use 0 nic...again, its a spin off and a part of the industry.

You do get more vapor and as importantly, more flavor with sub ohms, but unless you are shooting for a Guiness record for vapor, you don't go to those extremes.
Not knocking.

I'm probably missing something important here but do I really need to venture into the sub-ohm realm?? I mean I have a VW device and if I use a RDA at 1.5 ohms microcoil at 15 watts wouldn't it be the same as using a 0.9ohm at the same wattage?

is there really something that I'm not seeing or is it just the preference to use a mech instead of a VV / VW device?? that, I could understand...

It's relevant for me. I don't care what PV I'm using and I'm not after clouds, just the flavor from my zero nic juice. It's all about the flavor for me :thumb:

I'll be experimenting with micro coils soon to see what that is all about. In the meantime, 20 watts is about my sweet spot. I go through about 2 1/2 ml a day. Don't need to vape a lot, just like to have a great vape when I do. YMMV. You certainly do not have to venture into the sub-ohm realm. Whatever works for you works for you.

    Not knocking.

This vet has been using RDA's for as long as there have been RDA's, and have tried several sub ohm builds.

All I will say is that the same shoe does not fit every foot. I know the vape I want, and sub ohm doesn't happen to be it.

I totally agree with you tj ^^^. The nice thing is we have so many different shoes these days, almost everyone I hope has a good chance something will fit. Not too bad ...

    i didn't say it should...
I mean that if you are a vet and you knock it, then you either didn't try it or you didn't do it right...its a valid choice.

Huh? Since when is someone lying or doing it wrong if they don't like it? Some people like less flavor and vapor. I'm not one of them but I know people who think my vape is way too strong and some people even vape unflavored juice. Those people are not wrong, they just like a different vape than we do.

I think he might be making a distinction between simply not liking it and actively knocking it.

Micro or sub ohm I would say for sure that those getting into RBA/RDA for the first time that micro coil are much safer and easier to learn .If you can master a micro and learn about the dos and donts of coils and want to try sub ohm then go for it but better safe than sorry.I just dont want to see someone hurt them self when the whole point of vaping is to improve our health not risk it :2c:

    how does lying come in?

doing it wrong?... easy. RBA's and RDA's described by vendors as "for advanced users" not only because they can be dangerous, but because they require a skill set that takes some doing...
I'll be the first to say after over a year of tackling Genesis atomizers and sub ohms coils, I've gotten more wrong than right.
RDA's are easier to set up but even silica or ceramic wick at sub ohms takes some skill that requires more than a little stick-to-it-ness..

i don't think anyone enjoys carbonized juice Ryedan, and yes, there's a difference between not liking, and knocking. you're good at accentuating (bold type) but you're completely missing my point by not accentuating the right words. for one, try "knocking"

    How does lying come in?

Because you said tj: either didn't try it or didn't do it right after he said 'This vet has been using RDA's for as long as there have been RDA's, and have tried several sub ohm builds'

So, you say he's either lying or didn't do it right. The quotes above do support what I'm saying.

There might be history between tj and you that I know nothing about, but from what I have read in this thread I stand by what I said.

    Oh i got it...
You are being silly (reading more into to it than is there) ... as far as i know he didn't "knock" sub ohms vaping....
there's a DIFFERENCE BETWEEN NOT LIKING AND KNOCKING ... come on, dig a little deeper.
I didn't say tj was knocking it... hello?

you seem to be looking for drama ... go and look for some vet who is knocking sub ohms and i'll stand by my statements.

Let's keep this discussion civil or the mods will close this thread. It's too important of a subject for that to happen. This happens to be the most controversial topic in vaping today, so I can understand the back and forth bantering. But when discussion becomes arguing and things get personal this serves no useful purpose.

Hopefully everyone can agree that there is a potential general risk involved in just using our ordinary protected or IMR batteries with normal ohms, and that the risk can increase substantially if someone unknowingly uses the wrong batteries which are not able to put out the amps that sub ohms require. The point I'm trying to make is let's educate, teach, and learn from each other. Safety should be the number one priority in everyone's setup.

Ok I'll end the argument by simply saying WHY I don't like sub ohm.

#1 flavor is subjective, and each person will like the flavor (or lack there of) that they like. I mix most of my own flavors ... to MY liking. Understand that those flavors are mixed to perform best within specific parameters.

#2 is each person will like a specific draw, I happen to prefer a slightly stiffer draw than many. Back when, I never liked Kanger clearos for the same reason, and preferred Vision clearos instead. So quite naturally vaping with a 1.5+mm air hole simply doesn't do it for me.

#3 I even inhaled when smoking cigars or pipes, and I'll be damned if I'll buy into the idea that you don't need to inhale when vaping. It's just not me. If I can't inhale it .. and enjoy it .. I probably won't do it.

So I'm not knocking sub ohm, I'm just saying it's stupid from my prospective.
There was never a cigarette made that smoked like sub ohm vaping.

    and yes, I know ..... I'm old
