Indeed you do! Between you and TT there is never a dull moment..

That's for sure! By the way, I'll be grading a lot (like non-stop) most of the weekend. But, when I start to get burned out, I'll check our forum. It always cheers me up. :)

Forgot to mention that the non-stop grading has already started. :(

Should you be GUI..(Grading Under the Influence) LOL..

It's a necessity at quarter end! It might help the students a bit! For example, the cutoff for all work was Sunday night. The cutoff for those affected by the Alabama tornadoes was Wednesday. Tonight, a student that has a low D average asked if she could make up work. At first, I was really annoyed. But, after we emailed each other a few times back and forth, I'm accepting her work as long as it's submitted by Saturday night.

Your are a good Soul VGF!...Give those kiddos a break...just not too much of one! Otherwise they never get what reality is! :thumb:

Still grading, but thought I'd stop in for a minute. The student followed through. :) I'm hoping that this helps to motivate her in future courses. I also made her promise that she'll not do this again to other instructors.

I had another student email me this morning that's failing. She asked if it was at all possible that she could complete work to pass the course. Of course, I was very annoyed since final grades are due Sunday night! I replied to her email and asked her why she hadn't completed so much of the required work. It ends up that her adult nephew is dying from AIDs-related illnesses and tried to take his life twice in the past eight weeks. I felt so badly for this student, but still didn't say if she could complete the work. Instead, I asked her she didn't tell me sooner and also asked if she's talked to her advisor. She wrote back and said that she was ashamed and tried to carry the burden on her own. To make a long story short, her father also died of AIDs (drug user). When she reached out to people then, people treated her terribly. Thus, this explains her behavior this quarter now that her nephew has AIDs. So, yep, you guessed it, I let her make up the work today. She just finished about an hour ago and wrote me a very long email. She promised to never do this again and it seems that she's truly grateful. It's experiences like this that make me glad that I'm still human and willing to help (some instructors aren't).

I really hope I can finish grades by Sunday night!

I know that feeling. I'm trying to figure out why I agreed to 5 courses this summer

It is nice to see good Human instructors out there. I am currently taking on-line classes and have a real tough one right now. He does not seam human at all.

That's too bad... What course are you taking? Does he participate in your discussions? If so, does he lecture or instead treat you and the other students like equals?

When I started teaching, I made a vow to myself that I would never forget to be human. It does get me in trouble some times (like when my final grades are late!), but honestly, my boss is very understanding. So, all I do is mess up the Registrar's office. Oh well!

I am finishing up my B.S. I started 20 years ago but couldn't finish. Psych major. My current class is Learning and Cognition. He does participate, some but not as much as he should, and he seems condescending and really strict on writing. He is American but spent a lot of time in Europe. I feel like he puts, Americans and the American system, down a lot. I sure hope i don't mess up my GPA, I have all A's so far and don't want to screw it up, especially when all my other instructors have like my writing style.

Vaporgal, I'm glad to know you're kind to your students. We had a terrible death in our family back in January, and I didn't realize how much it affected my son (who is in his "final" year at university)...until he got a letter from the college about the drop in his grades. I talked to him about it, and he admitted that he had not been able to concentrate and had missed classes because he was grieving. If he had realized how much it was affecting his school work he could have discussed it with his instructors, but instead, he ended up with a huge drop in his GPA. I think that some young adults just don't think of that in time to take action, and procrastinate until SHTF...so I think it's very good of you to give your student a chance.
