I am looking at the following switch for a mod:

Digi-Key - EG4729-ND (Manufacturer - PV5S640SS)

My question is if this switch is rated at 2a@48VDC can it handle a possible 3-5amp load in a stacked 16340 mod witha max of 8.4v?

If so, is there a calculation to reach the amperage capabilities at 5-6v?

Thanks in advance.

convert 2 amps @ 48 volts to watts. Then you take your working voltage 5 or 6 volts and the watts and convert back to amps. So at 6 volts it would handle around 16 amps.

Actually I think the contacts are rated on the contact resistance.
The I squared R thingy of the switch contacts themselves.

When the switch is closed contact resistance determines contact heating.
With the switch closed it doesn't know the open circuit voltage that would show up if it was suddenly opened.

But I would guess it would handle 3 to 5 amps, at a low duty cycle, in a MOD.
Current only flows for a few seconds at a time :)

Probably one of the best switches you could buy, and it's a DC one. It's been proven in the field for years now in some of the most reliable and well respected PV's made.

A high amp rating on some no-name unbranded switch doesn't really tell you much. And the switch will be pressed many times, you need a well built switch.

I got some what looks to be cheaper knockoffs of that switch Rock.....it was listed as 4amp/125vac or 4amp/12vdc for $4 each...who knows if its really as advertised...but it looks like it could take it. The contacts from the screw connectors are about 0.1" in diameter...the dual spring loaded flat bar that makes the contact is about 0.25" wide and 0.020" thick. I wish they would make switches like this at least half the size...I ground the flange off of this one and the smallest you can get is about 0.73" OD. I have not used any of them yet because I never got to the mod I was going to put it in....but here is some gutted pics for you.

Edit: Oh I see they are 1/2" hole switches on Digikey..not 3/4"....I might have to get some of those myself.
