We use whatever is easier and cheaper to find. The $1 horn style switches from allelectronics.com work very well in my mods. But lately I have switched to tactile switches for my smaller VV mods.
Switches are usually the 1st component to fail in a mod - so it's well worth your time to find a switch that will stand the test of time. They don't have to be DC to hold up well in our mods, but there are quality DC switches available if you look.
I use this one in my Merlin mod: 3A, 28VDC: 800SP9B8M2QE
I use this one in my Denali mod: 2A, 48VDC: PV5S640SS
And I'm using this switch in my Hybrid mod: 2A, 48VDC: MP0042/2
Yeah, the milk frother (I have a few varieties of em) is what I named the Hybrid mod. The case is not quite a tube mod and not quite a box mod - so Hybrid came to mind for a name.
Rat shack isn't what it used to be, its all cell phones, tablets and overpriced rechargeable batteries now.
That being said, I believe most people opt for the AC switches because of price (can be as much as 10x more for a comparable DC rated switch.) On top of that, the application we're using them for is rather low power compared to what the switch is rated for and they hold up rather well.
Yes good quality DC switches would be ideal in mods, but good quality AC switches will do in a pinch.
