My FT GT-T 2 clones are really doing well but I'm slowly coming to the conclusion that they hit a sweet spot when the juice level is just around the top of the wick holes (bottom of the chimney cap). From then on the draw is just right (for me, at any rate), the flavour is just a bit more intense and the vapour is a touch more dense (maybe).
It's a .12 ohm (rock solid) nickel coil + cotton + DNA40 and I can enjoy top notch vaping until it's dry.
Standard glass tank or PC bell tank behave similarly, AFC is always fully open.

At the moment I'm just refilling about half a tank to get that sweet spot quickly. I'd love to be able to fill a full tank and get that same performance all the way through.

I think my coil and wicking is OK, the temp protection (at 195C 383F) never kicks in until dry.
I'm guessing it's the vacuum at half full that's getting the juice/air mix spot on? (Not to mention that curiously enjoyable "springy" draw that just pulls back a touch; maybe that's just my imagination though.)

Any thoughts gratefully received!
Funny...I used to feel this way and went for months NOT filling my tank due to this. Never shared it because I sort of thought it was imagination

Yes. Happens with a lot of attys. Sweet spot shortly after fill that goes away quickly and then comes back as the tank empties. The problem is the lack of reverse air flow back into the tank especially with high VG. You can try thinning the liquid or thinning the wick going through the juice holes and opening the juice control and widening the juice slots. On one of my GT clones the air bubbles would get trapped under the knurled chimney top juice control. As in trapped, would not release and go to top of tank. The bubbles just sat there over the wick holes starving the wicks. I had to grind slots in the knurling so the bubbles would release. Some tanks recommend an 80% fill for a 20% volume of air pocket at the top. With the way the GT fills you approximately get this already. When the level is low in the GT, tipping so the level of juice goes below one or both wick holes also helps to equalize the tank with ambient air pressure. On a "full" tank, sometimes inverting until the juice flows all the way down into the top can do the same. Tanks with top fill ports can work for a bit by opening and closing the port quickly to equalize without flooding but has to be repeated ie KFV4, Erl. Although I have found the GT V2-S clone along with the Kaiser and Rose V2 are top performers for juice flow, I have found a way to wick the GT better. With this single layer hollow core mesh/OC wick approach I'm using, it wicks awesome with 100VG with little difference between "full" and empty. Using 80 mesh now instead of the 400. It bubbles like mad. Very porous. I have sustained 30W at 360F on the V2-S with this wick approach and no leaking. Kind of amazing, much better than solid core rayon which I found worked better than solid core cotton. This setup is quickly becoming my favorite even over the Rose V2 which up until now has been my favorite.

SS mesh and OC.

2mm mandrel. One layer of mesh and one layer of the OC. Cut so ends just touch when wrapped on mandrel. OC is the outside layer of a pad.

Gives a hollow core so the juice can soak through evenly and have the same and shortest wick length to every wrap and every point on each wrap of the coil.

And this works without flooding? With a hollow mesh straw wrapped with a thin sheet of cotton?

Yes. Happens with a lot of attys. ...
Thanks very much indeed for that great write up. Rings very true and it's great to know we weren't imagining it after all!
Thanks also for the mesh / cotton build; if I can find some mesh I shall give it a go later.

I've just received a Nano Tank and Top Cap from FT (dwcraig1posted a pic of them somewhere in this thread which gave me the idea). First impressions are excellent. When you fill up the level is just about at the sweet spot and, 10 toots in, I'm in a very happy place. So big thanks to dwcraig1 for that.

I just tried 350ZMO's mesh* & cotton wick. (8 turns 27awg/.36mm, 2mm ID, annealed NI200, ~= .1 ohm)
I'm amazed.
+ At 20W** and 215C (420F) it's very good. A lovely fat bubble rolls out after every draw but, so far, no leaking.
+ There's no burn in time required*** and there's full flavour from the get go.
+ The build sits really easily between the posts, no shorting (as with my fancy twisted 3mm coils).
+ I really like having a bigger power range to use - I'm looking forward to a big hit first thing tomorrow!

- The only problem I have is that it's spitting at me a bit. I don't know if I wound the coil too tight, too loose or too widely spaced.

. I shall be interested to see how long this wick lasts; I reckoned on 2 or 3 tanks for standard Ni200/Muji.

BIG thanks to 350ZMO (again). :thumb:

* No idea of the mesh size; it came with an unloved FT Kraken.
**Never managed that kind of power before without something horrible happening.
(Actually, 20W is a bit too much for me with a 9 mg juice so I've gone down to 12-15W.)
***My annealed nickel/cotton always needed at least 10 puffs to settle down.

YW. Yes it will spit occasionally at higher power. It doesn't seem to be affected by wrap tightness. Over time as the coil gunks up that tendency will lesson. A little thicker cotton also lessons that but flow isn't as good. I think you got it spot on for juice flow. I was actually looking for some 50 and 100 mesh to try and I found - this. It uses 80 SS mesh. All I had to do was cut one of the panels out then form and cut to size. The 80 mesh tube is a lot more sturdy but I can't say it flows better. I think flow is limited by the cotton.

If you want perhaps a clone the Hcigar is spot on, EhPro has different tank threads.

Thanks Craig. All my Googling and I couldn't find an authentic in stock that ships to the US. Nor could I find a used one on any forum.

Since you have great skills, let me know if you find a Little Sue by Steampipes.

Thanks again buddy. I got a couple new 17mm mods coming in and am trying different toppers.
