A buddy of mine ran out of wick last week for his clearomizer and wrapped a new coil around a rolled up teabag. So far it's been wicking well and I'd say it carries about the same dangers of dry burning as cotton wicks. Wicking performance seems to be good so far as well since he started vaping it on Friday.

Has anyone else tried this?

FYI, he's using a generic disposable clearo:

Definitely born of desperation, lol.

Update: So far, the performance is almost as good as silica but with the drawbacks of cotton where a dry wick will burn pretty quickly. In addition, it seems to filter darker liquids somewhat in that the liquid will get clearer and the wick will darken considerably. Seems to mute the flavor slightly as well and requires rewicking.

So far, seems to be a decent enough replacement in an emergency.
