When my 20-yr-old son is on the phone, he is forever saying "I hear ya". His translation is probably "I can't really say anything because my mom is in the room". But an "I hear ya" button could mean, "I see your point, whether or not I agree with you".
My 20something sons are pretty sarcastic. I don't know whom they get it from. When they're on the phone & I'm nearby they say things like "OK, I'll drop off your .... after dinner" ... or "No, we're still waiting for the lab to call with the test results"...
Those are little indications that I need to stop listening in...
