Thailand to ban e-cigs

BANGKOK, June 13 (TNA) – Public Health Minister Chaiya Sasomsab ordered a study on information of electronic cigarettes to find measures to prevent importing e-cigarettes to Thailand because existing law doesn't cover the new product.

The e- cigarette consists of a cartridge, an atomizer, and a rechargeable battery. It doesn't contain tobacco but it has nicotine, propylene glycol, a chemical used in a fog machine, and fruity taste. Each cartridge is the equivalent of 15 conventional cigarettes.

The public health minister said that although e-cigarettes don't emit smoke, they pose harm to smokers with the level of nicotine higher than found in conventional cigarettes.

He ordered the Food and Drug Administration to conduct a study of e-cigarettes and to discuss with agencies concerned to draw out preventive measures.

Mr. Chaiya said the target group of this new product is young people as they are eager to try a new thing.

He added that the intake of nicotine is approximately 50 microgrammes for each inhalation. The substance can cause harm to heart and blood vessels.

The level of nicotine in blood as high as 25-50 nanogrammes per millilitre can increase a risk of having Ischemic heart disease (IHD). (TNA)

preventative measures makes me think that they just want to find any way possible to get rid of them. I like the fact that since they don't know enough they are scared of them.

After reading it, I want to know where they get THEIR nicotine cartridges with more nicotine than a cigarette. The New Zealand report confirms by lab test that a high 16mg liquid produces half the nicotine of a normal cigarette inhalation. No liquid on the market today for e-smoking produces as much or more than your basic Marlboro drag.

I understand the humor behind your post but I'm missing the reference to Hunter Thompson. Sorry, I must have missed a previous post by you. What is the Hunter Thompson in reference to?

Hey leaford, I don't like correcting people but you seem like a nice guy and I just wanna save you from a stress related heart attack! lol TB's post said it was 50 microgrammes not milligrammes, so that works out (on the basis of 15 puffs per cig) at about 0.75mg which is a lot weaker than the average cig so, either way they're wrong about there bein more nicotine!

Cindy: Thompson, may his troubled soul rest in peace, put Gonzo Journalism on the map with a Fear and Loathing series of articles/books. He smoked what looked like a pen style e-cig, but was a real cig in a holder! Anyhow, what we have today is "fear and loathing" of all things smoking, real or e-maginary. So, to follow his lead, someone has to write "Fear and Loathing in E-Smoke Land."

Probably heard that 'news' from the idiot that put himself up as 'expert' on TV etc in the Netherlands, the first day he ever heard about their existence... went blabbering on TV about how each cartridge held as much nicotine as two packs of cigarettes... Boy was it an uphill fight, after that went all over the media, to get anyone naming or even knówing the true figures...

But the cartridge itself is supposed to "contain" enough to last the amount of a pack of regular cigs. While its not designed to give a smoker that much, I'm sure there is more than a normal cigarettes nicotine amount within. And I'm sure it will be easy to prove because, cartridges are packs.

This is exactly what I was talking about in some other threads. The cart=pack design is going to be problematic and remain that way. Its a serious ..... in e-cigs armor and easy to blow the whole product away with simple disinformation.

I just found out that smoking has been banned in bars in Thailand. And that there is active enforcement, involving undercover Thai police. My friend also found out that on the spot fines, ie bribes, were standard procedure with the undercover police. Fines are for both the smoker, and for the bar. This is why e-smoking is being banned. It threatens a revinue source.

That interesting. Just about every site I've been to that sells e-cigs has disclaimers all over the place that these things are not for "young people."

How do politicians get away with this kind of thing? How is it that the e-cig sellers can say over and over that e-cigs are not for "young people," they can say it till they're blue in the face, and then some politician can say they're marketing it to "young people?"

What?! I thought that when the e-cig sellers said forty-eleventy-billion times that their products are not for "young people," that pretty much excluded the possibility that they were saying their products are for "young people."

Am I missing something?

Yes. The threat of litigation.

Tobacco companies, in particular, say now that no one should use their products. Quit smoking immediately. The products, even if used as intended, will cause diseases or kill you. Why do they say that? Only one reason: If a lawsuit is filed, they can go into the courtroom and say "We tried to warn people, your honor. We made the danger clear. We can't be held responsible for a person's individual choices."

Same with e-smoking. The warnings against underage sales and use by pregnant women are meant to immunize them against damage lawsuits -- that will be filed anyhow in years to come. Wonder what kind of warning we'll soon see on E-Liquid and Cartridges ...

"E-smoking is bad and can cause your tongue to turn black and fall out." We warned you.

Follow the money.

Who wins? Chinese companies. Who loses? Government, Big Pharma and Big Tobacco.
