Here is my initial thought...I'm actually making the foam part of the dart too big. But then I'm dripping too many drops on top of the dart to start my wick.

The reason I think this is because when I first start, it does flood the atty and it leaks.

However once I get past that, I start getting some pretty good vape...but the flavor & throat hit goes away. And then it tastes like plastic.

If I take the dart out & look into the cart, I see plenty of liquid in there, which tells me that the foam is not allowing the liquid to pass through.

So my initial flooding & leaking must be from the first drops I put on top of the dart. Once those initial drops are gone, then I end up dry vaping.

Your thoughts?

OK...I hate to do this...but for now, I have to accept defeat. What makes it even more difficult is seeing how many people this mod has worked for, and how easy everyone says it is. I just simply can't seem to get it right. Maybe I'm just an idiot...I don't know.

I seem to either make it too big or too small. I go from dry, harsh vaping with a plastic taste, to leaking like an uncorked wine bottle, and a flooded atty. It has worn me down...at least for now.

I have only been vaping for a little over a month. And I know everyone says there is a learning curve. And I know I actually enjoy this as a "hobby" sometimes...tinkering with the stuff & seeing what I can do with it. But I also need some successes...and those are so far & few between when it comes to cart mods. And sometimes...I just want to be able to get my stuff and go...and not have to worry about leaking, or topping off every 5 minutes.

So I've given in...to an extent. I ordered some PBT carts from Cignot, since I could NEVER seem to get those right. I've ordered some blue foam slugs from StrictlyEJuice...since I could never seem to get those right either. And well...

I would be willing to pay one of you to make me some of these darts for me. Someone out there who feels they have it perfected and can make some really good ones for me...I'LL PAY YOU!

I figure this way, I can try out all these PBTs, Foam Slugs, & Foam Darts made from others...and if they work well for me, I can have a better model (than just pictures or YouTube vids) to try to start building mine from.

I would need them sized for the 510 model. I'd be interested in getting about 10 or more darts for my PG liquids, and 10 or more darts for my VG liquids.

So...if you would be willing to make some for me, PM me and we can talk about it.

Don't feel alone, I have given up on blue foam as well. Everytime I feel that I have it right and take some carts with me, I start having flooding issues and they always happen at the worst times. There is some element that I am just not seeing.

The closest that I have come to success is using white filter foam (large cell) (LCF) cut to the full depth of the cart with a 3/16" plug of very small cell foam pushed on top. The small cell foam (SCF) comes from the typical 1.5# density polyester foam used for camera case inserts. The SCF wicks more agressivelly than the LCF therefore draws liquid to it and resists dripping. The only thing that I have to work out now is the level of liquid to put in, if it is too high it sometimes floods 1 out of 10. So far 90% of the time all liquid is consumed, 10% a little liquid still in the bottom.

Sorry it's just not working for you. I do appreciate the feedback cuz if it's not working for you then it still needs to be improved. Tell you what. I can't believe I'm even saying this (please, someone stop me) but if you PM me with your address I'll actually send some to you. I'll do this only if you're using a 510. Let me know what voltage you vape at and what juice you use (PG vs VG). I'll do this just for Dolvey and CAarnold40 if they want, just to see if it's the concept or how you're making it. That way I'd know if my directions need tweaking or the concept does.

You are a noble man Pete!

That's what I call believing in your own invention!

Pete, just one question - and I'm sure it has been asked before; is it difficult to fill the cart? I've had great success with easy refilling making a breather hole on the side of the cart - about ø1.5mm. I also cut a 1mm groove from the air vent to the front of the cart to allow air to move from the atomizer to the airvent therby eliminating an airlock in the cart. You can see my pics in this post -
http://www.e-cigarette-forum.com/forum/cartridge-mods/67305-new-idea-groove-air-vent-cart-gav-cartridge.html - maybe an idea that could be incorporated in yours?

Let me know please.

Cheers!

I'm using the groove method and it works great.

I did read about the Groove Air Vent mod. I had a hard time understanding the path of the foam. I think I get it but I wasn't sure. As far as refilling, it takes less than 10 seconds. I actually thought about doing a video on it. (Not going to happen, too lazy). You just pull out the dart, add 12 drops, part the dart back in. You can do it with your fingers alone. Maybe a marrage of these 2 mods would be a marrage made in heaven. I just haven't had a problem with air pressure with this. I did with every other foam mod but for some inexplicable reason, this just vapes dry for me.

Agreed. Too much foam. I just add one drop to the top after filling with 12 drops. Cut the foam part narrower by removing some from each side. My finished dart is about 12mm wide. Also, the foam should be about 4-5mm high (from the top of the stirrer to the top of the foam.

Mine are the same size for my 901.... maybe even a little narrower. It almost drops right into the cart, just big enough to touch the sides. I also cut it so it sits about 1-2mm below the rim of the cart to allow room for the atomizer. This way the atomizer bridge doesn't compress it too much causing wicking issues. :D

Does any one know if this BFD will work with a sidesho cart?
hey grandma, I am late catching this thread and new here, but I have and love the sidesho. If you haven't already found what works well for draining out this tiny juice container, I just fill it with the foam close to twice the containers diameter and cut off the excess at the top of the juice container, pull out the foam, fill with juice just over 3/4 full, slide foam back in ( you can pinch or gently roll the foam in), prime the top with 1-2 drops, slide the container back into the cart and vape away! easy as that it's been a week now and it still works like a champ just wash and dry the foam once a day. sorry if I am telling you somthing you already know but I saw you have the sidsho and got happy.

duabley,
Thank you so much for the info. I got the dart to work with a little tweaking. But I am going to also try what you just told me. I love my sidesho!!! I got one for my husband and he really did not enjoy it that much till I used Pete54's BFD. Now he is much happier. It always fun to see someone have the same e cig as you, so you know there is always help. Tony from ModernVapor and Pete54 are truely awesome people!!! I love the forum.

hey Pete
I read your whole thread the other day and believe you've nailed the 510, nice work to you and your predecessors and you for your hard work on this thread!
through much trial and error I've successfully modded a 510, mega, an mv902, and a m201 just for the hell of it, with the BFD and they all work like champs!-Il'd say your concept is definately sound. my work cigs are super minis (blu and sidesho) with their tiny D shaped juice containers. a thin blue foam plug works really well for these but is a messy pain to refill. so far I cant get this mod to work on em the juice just won't pass the plug no matter how much I've trimmed it down! Yet it'll sail through into a piece of tp. frustrated, tomarrow I'm going shopping for every foam I can find! any ideas?
oh yeah as far as air flow, just to check, I put 3 needle holes in the container along it's flat side >didn't help.

This is what you are looking for. They have it at Petsmart and most other large Pet Store chains.

I have been using this mod for about 3 weeks and it has been working great. However, I have developed a problem with two of my attys. When I use the darts that work with my other attys they vape fine for the first 6 or seven hits then develop a burnt taste usually indicative of being out of liquid. When I check the cart there is still plenty of liquid left. These are new attys from a different source than the others I use. I'm wondering if the bridge is shorter and I need to use a longer straw. I have tried these same darts on my other attys and they work great.

Are both Joye brand? I can't imagine much difference in 510 atty's. If they are the SLB atty's, those have a higher resistance and therefor run a bit cooler and use less juice. I have no idea why that would make a difference. I have used the darts on HV atty's from SLB without issues.
