I ready don't understand how mechanical mods can advance vaping technology...
Those people buy a lot of expensive toys and high continuous discharge batteries. That pumps money into the industry, which funds ongoing research and development by real scientists and engineers. Consumers create a market. My paltry purchases are certainly not going to pay for very much battery research. Tesla Motors helps too, of course :)

From what I have seen on here, cheap 'clones', cheap juice and re-wrapped eBay fakes seem to prevail...

Vaping is just a tiiiny little drop in the ocean of batteries. Your mentioned Tesla has signed a deal with Panasonic for 2 billion 18650 batteries over the next 4 years. And they're just one company doing one thing with batteries. It's a snowball effect. The better batteries get, the more applications they become viable for. Battery research is huge. The fact that we're actually vaping is just a side-effect of this research, not a driving force. I doubt it ever will be. Bigger clouds is a result of better batteries, not the other way around.

(OK that got a bit ranty. Sorry about that! Not aimed at you in particular. The kettle's been boiling for a while ;))

So, just for perspective....
The FDA is not going to ban vaping, and cite a youtube video or the "dangers" of a (lets be honest) moderately small hobby.

Regardless, people are going to do what they do.

Also realize that cloud chasers generally use 0 nic juice. So, I mean anyone can make cloud chasing juice. Walmart sells it in the pharmacy section right?
It really is so easy to make e-juice that ultimately there is no way to "ban" it.
Lets be real here.

When I was still smoking the real stuff - I rolled my own with a little cig machine and pre-made paper tubes, and "pipe tobacco"
It was 18 bucks for almost 3 cartons.

Perspective.

I understand why so many new vapers get caught up in cloud chasing. Vape shops are into it and the people behind the counter are blowing clouds. I see them and it looks both unnecessary and cool at the same time. I've vaped a 23.5 watt DNA30 mod and the flavor and vapor were kind of nice. There was almost no throat hit and the vapor was cool ... no hot draw at all.

Doing that didn't make me want to buy one. My Kayfun is going through 50ml of juice in a little over a week. I don't need a juice shredder mod

Still, it's obvious that cloud vapors in public will turn people away from vaping. You can't really stealth vape a cloud maker. At first, people think we are smoking. When they find out it's vapor and they can't see your face until it clears, they will still wonder why we just don't quit that, too.

Don't recall the Federal Government getting involved in legislating computers and how one should handle Y2K.

No, but a few years back there was all this hooraw about how Congress was going to "regulate the internet".... then they finally realized that the US DOESN'T OWN THE INTERNET!!!

At this point they seem to believe that the US "owns" vaping... but it doesn't; it belongs to the whole world, and a lot of that world doesn't give a rat's patootie about US laws. And sure, customs this and customs that, it might make it more difficult to get stuff imported, but it doesn't make it impossible -- as the very ineffective 'war on drugs' has demonstrated for years. They don't have enough customs officers to open every single pkg, and they don't have enough money to hire and train enough officers to open every single pkg. And eventually, with enough lawsuits, they will figure out that it's just not cost effective -- or sensible -- to try and regulate e-cigs in the manner they seem to be proposing.

Contrary to what many, if not all, people who rebuild want you to believe, it is NOT *the* endgame for vaping.

I took umbrage to a girl who acted shocked when I told her I use carto tanks exclusively. She kept asking me "why".

Why? Because I like it and it suits me best, that's why.

1) I couldn't care less about the size of my vapor clouds.
2) I get plenty of flavor out of a carto. Even Japanese cotton tastes different than my cartos. Not as good, in my opinion. IN MY OPINION.
3) I don't want to go through 60 mls in three days. Part of the reason I switched to vaping was to save money.
4) I don't care for the young dripper crowds. I find myself zoning out when I hear the constant gibbering about coil builds.
5) I don't care for the attitude young drippers present; don't act like I'm some kind of relic from the ancient days of 1 year ago and everything I do is sub-par and beneath you.
6) I really, really, really, REALLY couldn't care less about your coil build. I don't care. Yes, I see it, you took the cap off and pressed your fire button. I see the coils turn red. Yes, yes, I see it. So.... what do you want me to do? Burn effigies on the lawn in your name?

#2 is Blasphemy! Koh Gen Do kicks carto tanks butts hands down!

Haha just kidding. I agree that vaping is all a preference, and I'll admit that when I got my Ibtanked working well, it was an enjoyable vape.

Personally, I vape at about .37 on my Reo Grand in public on a dual coil Trident V2. Sure it produces nice clouds, but not cloud chasing competition grade by any means. I am conscious about how I use it in public, and I'll typically wait until there's a fair gap between me and a person before I'm comfortable using it. I do not use it indoors, and when I do it's usually at a bar, and only after I make sure it's okay with the bartender. If I'm sitting near someone, I'll usually ask them if it's bothering them.

I do this out of consideration for others because I automatically assume that vaping offends those around me, and because I approach vaping this way, I have had no run ins with rude people or people getting in my face about vaping

I'm not aware of anyone claiming the FDA is going to "ban" vaping.

In fact the FDA Deeming Proposal spells out exactly what their vision for the future of vaping is---it's all there in black and white.
(It's a shame that more people won't ever read it.)
It even references the governing legislation ( LAW) behind it (FSPTA 2009)

Enjoy how you vape today but understand that it is not going last.
We are currently enjoying an experience one rarely does:

And that is this:
There are currently NO enforceable REGULATIONS or STANDARDS governing the design, production, compliance, or distribution of ANY of the devices, components, accessories, or e-liquids that we currently use except one:

YOU CANNOT CALL IT A SMOKING CESSATION DEVICE.
(That comes from litigation not legislation and the very reason no vendor will make the claim their device will help you quit smoking.)

Literally all you need to be a "vape vendor" is some money and a merchant's license (and that's only if you set up a shop).
I could stick a toaster on top of a car battery and sell it as a "MOD" as long as I don't say it will help you quit cigs.

State and local governments have rushed to pass enforceable laws--but those only dictate where you cannot vape (essentially expanding smoking bans to include vaping) & prohibiting sales to minors (essentially plugging a gaping hole)

This is all about to change in the near future.

The 2009 Family Smoking Prevention and Tobacco Act prohibits (i.e. made illegal) the use of FLAVORS other than tobacco and menthol in tobacco products because that could attract kids to smoking. How do you think flavored ejuices will fair?
The paper and filter material in a cigarette is now considered a "tobacco product" . The FDA deeming proposal will extend this definition to tanks, coils, batteries, etc for ecigs.
The FDA has outlined a process for gaining "approval for sale" that all vendors of devices, components and liquids will be required to submit to unless your product was on the market as of Feb 15, 2007 or your product is "predicated" on it.

So in the future the FDA will be the gatekeeper that any vendor must pass through in order to sell their tobacco or tobacco-related products in the US.
My wife worked for Pfizer on new drug development for over 10 years.
Pfizer had an entire department whose sole job was FDA compliance. Think your local vape shop is prepared for that?
FDA approvals took anywhere from 3+ years to NEVER (i.e. not approved for sale).

Oh and all of the above assumes some idiot like that Youtube rag guy doesn't blow up himself and crowd full of innocent bystanders with his "bad build"
If that happens it won't be the FDA dropping the ban-hammer it will be the alphabet soup of federal agencies and consumer protection groups with letters like ATF

Second hand smoke is one thing.....second hand shrapnel is a whole different ballgame.

But as you correctly stated your ability to buy your nicotine free vegetable glycerin and blow your flavorless clouds most likely won't be affected.
A smoke machine might be a cheaper and safer option though.
Wal-Mart sell em in aisle 12 and unlike cigs you can still use them in bars.

Is this the future of vaping now? Seems like so many people now are more interested in big time vapor, rather than using ecigs as an alternative to smoking and getting their nic fix.

It reminds me of when I was a kid and how we used to ride our bikes, or play hockey and basketball on the street. Nowadays, kids play with iPads, tablets, cell phones and high definition video games. And they wonder why the obesity rate is so high. Gee, I wonder.

It just goes to show how much technology has changed society as a whole. People do things just because it's the "in" thing to do.

There's cloud chasing contests now and "meets" where people go, to see who can blow the biggest cloud? Lol it's laughable.

I can't recall a time when bikes were exclusively used for transportation or when wicking a rock across a frozen pond was done just for fun rather than as a professional sport.

Once upon a time bows were for hunting and killing your enemy, while they still serve that same purpose more likely they are tossing arrows at targets in a school gym.

My opinion is do what you want with your rig, just do so in a manner that doesn't effect me or anyone else. In this case your rig might be the bow, a bike, a gun, an e-cigarette, or a stick and a rock.

I think declaring a "world champion" football team is laughable when you don't invite any other countries, but I don't begrudge people their enjoyment of the Superbowl.

I agree and disagree..I started out vaping to quit smoking. I like to build and try different things now blowing clouds is on of them. Its not to impress anyone just kinda turned into a hobby. I dont go every place blowing giant vapor clouds mostly just at home. I see nothing wrong with it as long as you do it safe and arent bothering anyone :)

Maybe because it's a given that NO other country can field a football team that could even beat a Division 1 college team in American Football. It's a given that the US champion is the best in the world.

Just sayin.

I completely agree. I started vaping for one reason only: to cut down or quit smoking -- I managed to quit. That replacement, in such a way that it doesn't aggravate my asthma even more than cigarettes (which thick clouds definitely do!) is all I care about. My eliquid is always at least 75% PG, my vapor as thin as *actual* cigarette smoke, and that is just perfect. It is NOT necessary to fog up the joint to be satisfied with vaping as a substitute for smoking -- smoking does NOT produce that kind of thick "fog."
...

I'm the same way. I prefer my vape exhale to be more or less the same as exhaled cigarette smoke, so around 15% VG for me tops (and much of the time 0%).

I rarely find myself in the company of other vapers and am drawing more from various posters I've seen on YouTube, but I wonder if this is a younger vaper thing ("younger" meaning under forty or so).

I see no reason why someone could not get a satisfying vape out of something other than a rebuildable. However I feel like you have made a lot of assumptions in your post that are not necessarily true about the use of rebuildables &/or those who use them.

1. Some people build their own coils for efficiency & not necessarily for huge clouds.
* I use a dripper because I hated filling stuff up (ie tank, carto, clearo etc.).
* I don't have to clean a head with a rebuildable
* I don't have to rebuild very often (once every 2 months or so).
* for the amount I paid for 2 atty heads I bought enough kanthal & wicking material to build new coils on my devices for at least a year if not more.
2. Some people use a "reasonable" amount of eliquid with a rebuildable. I go through about 3 mil a day on average.
3. Some people who use rebuildables are not young.
4. Some people who use rebuildables don't care about other people's builds. I just want to build a coil that works properly & constantly without messing around with it all the time.

5.

I agree with those points, except, the idea of having to 'drip' for every puff or three is, to me, way too much "fiddling around with it". I like my 4ml-5ml tanks for that reason alone -- don't have to fiddle with them too often!

And also, I cannot tolerate the vape from a dripper; at first it's like sucking air, just nothing, no resistance at all, like trying to "smoke" a straw, then WHAM! scorched lungs, asthma attack, coughing till I gag. No thanks! Way too much, and too hot, vapor for me.

When I first tried the Kayfun, it seemed like almost too much TH, but I was using extremely high PG at that point, about 85%, trying to get decent TH from a T3S. With the Kayfun, going to about 75%-80% PG was just right, perfect TH, plus the big ol tank that I don't have to fiddle with very often. And I can close down the airflow about 75% so there is some resistance in the draw -- with my caterpillar, even if I close down ALL the holes, there's just no resistance, it's just air -- then fire in my throat!
