When I receive those remarks from people it makes me wonder what I myself believe about certain subjects. Even if I go beyond the popular media, are even pub meds accurate and fair?

well, if popcorn is formed inside of the lungs, then that would mean you would have to first have popcorn kernels inside of your lungs. Second, your lungs would either have to be super hot, or they would have to emit high intensity microwaves..... Unless you have super rare lungs, then I doubt popcorn can form in your lungs... Besides, you would certainly know it as you would be coughing up popcorn.
