The nicotine vaccine...my two cents. What's yours?

My point? Do not mess with my brain and my neurotransmitters, dear government. Please.

Nicotine is a good thing and is being studied, quietly, as a possible cure and treatment for many, many diseases. But the Antz have declared nicotine public enemy number 1--so you can't even talk about it. What if this vaccine kills people's nic receptors? All those possible treatments will be useless for them.

Just read this article; it was written in the NYT in 1997--not much in the mainstream press about nic research recently.

Researchers Investigate (Horrors!) Nicotine's Potential Benefits - New York Times

There's a little bit of nic research going on, and yes there are are diseases (alzheimer's, parkinson's, schizophrenia) where it's clear that acetylcholine and nicotinic receptors are involved. But the focus is on finding pharmaceuticals that mimic nicotine's actions, but that only affect one nicotine receptor subtype (there are lots of receptor types with properties that are all slightly different and they're distributed in many areas of the brain).

the lack of focus on the effects of nicotine alone isn't really about the antz- though part of it is that nicotine is "addictive". Its also about the fact that nicotine has very broad effects because of the distribution of and activities of the many receptor subtypes. People who research nicotinic receptors and the cholinergic system in disease don't really care about the antz- the idea is to find the best, most specific treatment for a given disease.

Say, for instance, that one type of nicotinic receptor activates a region of the brain that is disrupted in a given disease state. Another subtype of receptor activates a different region that suppresses the first brain region. Ideally, you want to enhance the activity of the disrupted region, and leave the other unaffected. A drug based on nicotine that affects the receptors in the first region would do what we want it to- enhance the first without affecting the second. Nicotine would activate both brain regions, so you might not see a therapeutic effect.

Sadly, its nowhere near that easy to do well- especially since we don't completely understand the mechanisms of those diseases. It's even harder to explain clearly (as you might have noticed) so the mainstream press isn't that interested, because it doesn't translate into simple sound bites.

(the vaccine *shouldn't* affect the receptors- it binds to nicotine not nicotinic receptors. It's more likely to cause problems by binding to endogenous molecules that are structurally similar to nicotine- and that would be bad enough)

Yeah, it shouldn't.

Anyway, I wouldn't touch a vaccine like that with a 10-foot pole. I want my nicotine--or at least an option to use it and potentially benefit from any treatment that may someday be available. I want vaccines against diseases--like polio or TB. Period.

Anyway, I've done some research. ;) We've been discussing this vaccine crap since 2009.

Hey, this one is yours! :D

And I really like this one--brain injury leads to smoking cessation. See my posts above.

SO scary. I mean this is the type of stuff that scares the poop out of me.
Why would any1 willingly have some random .... shoot them up with a nicotine blocking drug.
Its so lazy, misguided, undeducated, LAZY! and again... Its LAZY! Do your RESEARCH humans!

I mean these vaccines are like taking a pill to lose weight. They are just plain silly.
Unless you have a medical condition where your body holds fat that you dont need? STOP THE PILLS!
All you have to do is WALK. WALK! Your an ANIMAL! an ANIMAL! Animals NEED TO WALK! AND RUN!
(woah... I know, I know, running sounds out of the question when walking already sounds ludacris)
lol... But seriously. Look at the other apes of this planet. They all walk around and run around.
In fact... Come to think of it... Most animals move. The only animals that don't move are mollusks.
Those little clams that latch onto a rock and then their sole purpose is to sift water and eat junk.
Hmph. Sounds like some humans I think we all know, doesn't it? lol. We're all turning into CLAMS!?

Just TAPER. Just do some reading. Some R-E-S-E-A-R-C-H! RESEARCH! SEARCH, then, RESEARCH! lol.
You have got to put a little effort into the things that you want to succeed at attempting.
That means that if you want to lose weight, you'd benefit from going online and reading about losing it.
You know... Use a BOOK, those things you have on your case-book thingy in your couch TV room.
They are sort-of like your playboy and Country Homes magazines.....
but with more words & less pictures of all the stupid crap that you can't afford. lol.
You just hit your local readery, (library) or your internet (your actually on that right now bion)
& then you just GOOGLE or BING the words "How to lose weight" or "How to kick nicotine"
Then, you look at the 1st 10 websites about losing weight or quitting your drug of choice. BOOM. DONE!
Then you take what you learned from R-E-A-D-I-N-G, and you apply it to your life.
For those of you that are over-weight, that probably means following a diet you read about.
For those of you that are addicted to a drug (including nicotine) that probably means counseling & a taper!

You SHOULD NOT prescribe to the belief that your fellow humans will create a pill for your problems.
NOT EVERY PROBLEM SHOULD OR COULD be solves with a PILL, or a VACCINE (fancy word for a shot btw)
