I just received my Opus today, and wanted to share my first impressions.
First, I was pretty excited to see these come up for sale. I'd been stalking them for a while, and really liked the look. I am also a big fan of the Kick in my mechanical mods, so the
dna internals and simple wattage adjustment was very appealing.
First, the good:
The size and feel in hand is just about perfect. My beloved Cartomator
tanks fit perfectly, with no overhang, and plenty of clearance for the wattage adjustment wheel. Overall, I really like the look. It's a nice change of pace from metal tube mods, which have been the staple of my arsenal thus far.
The button placement is great, and has a good feel. While it isn't clicky, it has good feedback, and seems quite pocket-friendly, which is good since there is no way to disable it.
The vape is solid - basically what I would expect. I don't have any way to meter the output, but I am not a high-wattage vaper, and I quickly found my comfort zone around what looks to be 9 watts based on the range of the dial, so right where I usually set my Kick.
It feels solidly assembled. There is nothing that feels loose or rattly.
No for the not-so-good:
There are some fit and finish issues I did not expect from a mod of this price, mostly to do with the metal end caps.
First of all, they don't mate with the wood body quite right. Both ends seem slightly off-center in the attachment to the wood body, so that the end cap very slightly overhangs the wood body in some areas, and slightly under-hangs on others. It's not obvious visually without looking closely, but is noticeable in-hand.
Also, the finish on the end caps seems a little sloppy. There is a distinct orange-peel texture to it, and one spot that looks almost like a finger print - as if it was handled before the finish was completely dry, or there was a little bubbling in the plating process in that area. It's definitely a plated finish, rather than the metal (brass?) being polished to achieve the shine.
Also, there is some odd discoloration in the drip well around the 510 connector. It almost looks as if some
juice had been spilled in there and stained it. I tried cleaning it with a coton swab and a little alcohol, but it didn't make a difference.
Overall, I think it's a nice device, but could use a little more attention to detail, particularly for the price. I don't mean to sound too negative though - I'm enjoying it a great deal so far.
Cheers!
