Lite "Plus" O-ring kits: 7 O-rings and 5 screws (2 - fill hole screws, 2 - post screws and 1 - air flow control screw) √ (I've been losing O-rings lately)

If I forgot anything or ordered something I don't need, so be it. The new toy has been ordered.

ETA: Why are they called "O-rings?" What else would they be? "H-rings?"

Do a vertical chimney build when you get it. RiP has a great video on it, I learned my technique watching him.

It is truly an amazing flavor experience.

That's exactly what I ordered (even though I shouldn't have!) and then I went to bed so I wouldn't think about all the money I've spent in the last three days, lol!

What are the advantages/disadvantages of this over regular build? I know I've never had much luck with builds that wicked around the outside of coils. I always thought that it was because the cotton that swelled when wet, shrunk when dry, and this caused the wick to pull away. With traditional core-wicking, even when the cotton starts to dry, enough is laying on the coil to keep from a dry burn.

In terms of air flow, the chimney/vertical coil makes the most logical sense. Just the wicking eludes me

A Lion's opinion:

The vertical build at 1/16" directly over the air flow hole allows the maximum air flow (without a restriction) of the device. I actually stick my 1/16" drill bit into the hole as I mount the coil to the deck. This means that the coil is perfectly in line with the air flow channel. When you place a coil in the horizontal, it creates a disruption of the air stream, so the air flow is reduced. How much? Maybe not too much, but any increase in pressure (must happen with any air stream impedance) always reduces air flow if all other things remain constant. By the way, this relationship between pressure and air flow is expressed this way: (SP1/SP2)=(CFM1/CFM2)2. SP = static pressure, CFM = air flow in Cubic Feet per Minute.

So couple this with the fact that the ENTIRE outside of the coil can be wrapped with wick using RiP's method, and you get maximum wicking (OD is greater than the ID), and maximum air flow. In my mind, it is the best way to apply the most power you can to a Kayfun.

I find the flavor with this method is noticeably better than the other methods when you get it right. Vapor and throat hit are about the same...maybe a bit more vapor production in the vertical build.

^ that. And it also looks so pretteh

Speaking of which, I just recalled posting here a step by step guide on doing it. Can't seem to recall who I was doing it for. Meh. But I still haz the pictures!

Very nice coil!

Very close to my technique...but...

I overlay a second (relatively light) strip of cotton over the high leg where it is exposed in your pic. The next rewick I do I will photograph and turn into a blog. It is long overdue.

Has anyone tried this with EkoWool? I have a sensitivity towards cotton. Trying to build a microcoil with Ekowool with Silica or Ekowool is a bit challenging since it doesn't "expand" much.

There was a video about using three pieces of silica to make a "steam sandwich" but it was a real PITA. I'm interested in this build since it looks like it might be easier to wrap the coil instead of thread ekowool through the coil..

I have! The problem was that unlike cotton, you can't exactly mold it into shapes that you want. Or at least not remotely as easily. The key to that build is to make sure you cover the outside of the coil all around. If you can figure that out, I'm sure it'll work fine. I just haven't had the patience to try it out proper.

Also Edd, I'm gonna try building a chimney with a double twisted 32ga kanthal. Let you know how it goes :D

Kind of figured as much. I guess I'll just have to be happy with my Double Strand Nest for now.

How does double twisted 32 ohm out, say compared to 30 gauge?

Almost identical, just a tad higher. Gives me 1.3 ohms, 7/8 wraps around a 1/16 drill bit every single time.

I just find the 30 to be so easy to work with (I have tried 32 and 28), I don't mess around with the "wire" end of the equation too much. I despise the ribbon.

Let me know what you find out!

I got you! I just needa finish up one of my kfl and I'll be on it. :D

I bought a 100ft spool of 32ga when I first got into rebuildables; damn things are so skinny and springy it was impossible to get a perfectly tight microcoil, no matter how much I torched it.

28 ga is just. Very very fat. Damned things take forever to heat up. I actually bought it specially for the chimney builds, just because I wanted to build a super tall chimney without a high resistance.

30ga is just perfect for my general use. Super easy to handle and I can still kinda stay in my 1.4ohms sweet spot easily. A twisted double 32ga is almost identical in that regard actually; just a lil bit stiffer so it's dead easy to have a super tight coil without even pinching.

Knowing your line of work, I trust your opinions when it comes to air flow :)

The 1/16" is a little smaller diameter than I normally use (2mm), so that may be a part of the equation I'm missing.
Also, I know you like 30 Awg., which is fine for me since I have a ton of it, How many wraps do you use, and what resistance do you see? I know with 8 wraps on a 2mm bobbin, I come in at around 2 ohms most of the time, which is great for the ProVari range. I'll have to give it a try sometime

I despised ribbon too until I twisted it on a drill. 2 & 3 pieces both work well. Yields a lot of surface area and takes out all the spring.

I was going to throw it away or PIF it to someone. Now I like it.
