My girlfriend was trying to describe to me this new core math stuff her kids have to do. I don't get it. It's ok to be close to the correct answer as long as you follow the core steps but if the answer is wrong, it's ok???

Um, I did too. It's the "show your work" BS. Nobody cares bout that in the real world. Just the answer. He was working on averages. Easy. Excel...put =AVERAGE(cell...drag to end cell) enter. Done. When I was in college, I just wrote where nobody could read it but I got the answer right. Got me by
