I'm no expert, Papaw, but did you heat the coil a few times before inserting the wick? I also try to fire it up 3 or 4 times (maybe 8-10 seconds) with a new wick before I actually take a hit off it. I also find that I go thru considerably more juice with an rba, so I have to squonk much more often to avoid dry hits. That and the air "intake" alignment with the coil are all I can think of, maybe someone else has an idea(s).

ETA: Yes for sure on the oil they come DRENCHED in, I boiled mine first.

Uhhh...no. Didn't do that. That is probably what's happening here. Thanks, Super X.

Brett, I'm not sure about silica, but when I first started with cotton, it was very important to make sure the wick was completely saturated before vaping off it. I used to drip some juice directly on it before covering it up to be sure.

Then I learned by squonking it with cover off several times how the squonking action delivers juice to the wick and would cover it and vape once I understood it and the wick was saturated. I still do it that way now when I rewick or recoil. Great job and don't give up. The rewards far outweigh the risks. :)

I would probably pull that wick and coil, alcohol the while assembly, rinse well and rebuild it. It's fun!

Thank You both, Super X and Puffer. Now maybe it's becoming appearant why I was not the least bit ashamed to entitle this thread "RBA's for Dummies" ! But Hey, I was always told the only stupid question is the one you don't ask!

Glad to help boss. Don't give up

OK, second coil; After soaking in 91% iso and rinsing in water, followed by carefully cleaning with q-tips- six coils around a toothpick, fired eight times, metered 1.6 ohms, wicked with cotton string aaand.... much better. Smoother, better flavor! Running at lower setting on VVG than I would a dual-coil carto, yet easily matches vapor/flavor production. Not Bad! Not bad at all :vapor: :)

EDIT: altough this Hornet gets awful hot to the touch. Is that normal for a SS RBA?

Yes, that's normal. I really like the Cherry Vapes drip tips on my RBAs because they keep my lips far away from the heat... :)

Mine barely gets warm. I heard it has to do with how close your coil is to the posts. The free end of my wicks is stuck between the posts, and it seems to stay relatively cool. As in, I can vape it without a drip tip, and it gets noticeably warm, but doesn't get uncomfortable.

Also, I noticed my beloved 30ga kanthal wrapped on a toothpick is too big for the Hornet :( Had to fall back to 32ga on a DUD wrench.

Congrats on your first successful coil. I tried mine for the first time yesterday. Made two coils and was a no go. Only metered out at 0.88 ohms. Put it away and tried again today. Watched some more video's etc. Used a small drill bit and wrapped 5 times around the shaft. Made much better even coil. Then put on the meter and 1.34 ohms. Used a bobbin threader and threaded some cotton yarn into it that JC Okie sent me. Re metered at 1.54 ohms. Saturated it with Bobba's Bounty and put cap on and beautiful tasty vape. Was so frustrated last evening thinking why did I buy this! Well much better today. Hopefully they all will get better for me with more experience!

Cheri, it will get better--and easier--all the time. Sounds like you have it. Once you get a good coil going, you can just change out the cotton/thread every now and then and continue on with the coil for quite awhile. Also, I notice that the vape gets better as a wick breaks in. It usually takes me several hours before it is "perfect" for me. Think about how much money you're going to save over pre-fab attys in the long run.

Actually I like Cherry Vapes Mings & Pawn better than Trippy Tips...go figure. I saw these and for the price I thought I'd give them a try. They should be in the mailbox on thursday. Drip Tips - Diamond Vapor

Hmm, another Hornet question (just got mine today).

It seems to leak bits of juice out of the airhole. I wonder if it has something to do with the position of the wick. Anyone have this problem too? And how do you deal with it?

Wick placement may affect it but most likely you are flooding some. You can try to train yourself to keep the hole pointed upwards some.

Yes I noticed this too when I give it a healthy squonk (I don't know if I'd call it flooding since the vapor and flavor is amazing). And I do what justice said about keeping the air hole facing up when I fire it. I find that with a fresh squonk, any excess juice flows over the air hole if you face it down while drawing and you don't get enough air flow to produce a good hit.

Question- If I make a coil with an extra long wick and then wrap the 'tail' between the two posts in the base of my Hornet, what would that affect? Would it help wicking juice or possbly clog feed from mod ?

It will help. I kept one tail long to wrap around the feed post then under the coil. Trim it flush with the coil once under. The other end I trimmed just past the coil. Worked awesome!

You don't want to block the air hole.

Cool! Might be time to rewick my coil as such. Thanks again Super X
