Heh, you're not kidding. We had a group of people out on a private mini safari in Zambia once, and split up into two groups. We were getting ready to bunk down at our site, when we noticed the other group's bonfire about a click away. It could be seen for miles. You can pretty much guess what happened.
When we went by the next day to pick them up, they were up in the trees cause a pride had become curious and came to check it out. Then some hyaenas, and various other species. I guess they learned not to advertise their presence
I used to live in West Africa, and there the problem isn't lions (we ain't got none). Leopards if you're alone at night, and especially elephants. Groups of young bachelors scare the living daylights out of me. There's nothing like staring into the jungle, knowing that there's a bull elephant within 40 feet of your location and you just can't see it.... scary stuff. And they are silent--very unnerving that something so big can be so stealthy. Plus Hippos and Buffalo, they're just plain deadly. Africa is fun, as long as you keep your wits about you.
Hmm.... interesting trip down memory lane. I'll be going back to visit friends and family in the next couple of years. I haven't been back to WA in the past ten years, so it's becoming an absolute must.
