Tony,

Your bottle of Dekang RY4 from late 2009 shouldn't taste or smell like Janty RY4.

As far as I know (which is to say, with some real info, some interpolation, and some guesswork), the mythic "lost" Dekang from 2009-early 2010 was Dekang's reformulation of the original Janty RY4 recipe, made sufficiently different that there would be no conflict, bad feeling, or (heaven forbid) litigation. Dekang reduced the vanilla, removed all trace of sourness, upped the caramel, and added sweetener (some who vaped it have said cotton candy flavoring).

My only mission is to try to get people to stop referring to the lost Dekang as the "original" RY4, which was from Janty, not Dekang. They are two different juices in recipe and overall taste. It's just that the majority of vapers never had the Janty original. Janty was a smaller company, their juices had limited availability, and their customer base wasn't nearly as large as Dekang's. For many vapers who started in 2008 and later, Dekang's version was the first RY4 they had or knew about, so naturally they assumed that it was the original. It's not. The lost Dekang formula was, however, such an immensely popular revision that Janty decided to alter their original RY4 formula, moving it somewhat closer to the revised Dekang.

After the secret recipe for the revised and ultra-popular Dekang RY4 was stolen in spring of 2010 by the Dekang flavor chemist who was leaving to start his own juice company, Dekang came out with a new RY4 that was closer to (not identical, but more similar to) the original Janty RY4. Less caramel, less sweetness. By that time, Janty was no longer selling the original formula. What that means is that, in a manner of speaking, Janty and Dekang switched positions, with Janty RY4 becoming more Dekang-like, and Dekang RY4 become more Janty-like. No wonder people were confused.

So, your bottle is indeed the "lost" Dekang RY4. It just can't be compared to the Janty RY4 being marketed at that point. Janty was still selling their original formula in late 2009, but they were about to come out with their Classic series, in which their RY4 was subtly reformulated by tweaking the recipe profile. Later, in 2011, they made a more major revision by increasing the flavor intensity, especially the caramel, for the Elixir Series RY4s (two of them---more-PG and more-VG base blends). The original Janty is now available again as Janty RY4 DK-Series.

Clear as mud, eh?

Clear as mud indeed lol. Each time I read about RY4, in almost any context, but mainly when refering to the "original" RY4, I seem to learn a little bit more and be confused a little bit more. So I'm moving forward in knowledge, while remaining generally cloudy about the whole thing. Maybe that's part of the mystique for me.

What I'm gaining in knowledge, I'm still lacking in experience, as I move through juices at a rather slow but steady pace, and have only had a few RY4s. But more RY4 will be coming soon.

Right now all I have left is just a couple ml of Our RY4 from MyVapeJuice, which I've enjoyed immensly. I have some GJ4 from GoodeJuice left, but at a couple months old it's lost a lot of what makes it any RY4 to me. It's still delicous, but in a different way, as the tobacco has had a chance to really bloom and almost take over all flavor. This is where most NET fans seem to like it best, but I think I enjoyed the sweeter, more caramel and vanilla at the lead, stage just a slight bit more. Mind, it still has those flavors, but is filling my need more for when I'm in the mood for a good NET while Our RY4 has been what I've grabbed to taste RY4.

Anyways back to the "original" that's been talked about. I WAS under the impression that the "lost" RY4 that so many loved and the recipe had disappeared or been stolen, was also the first, the original, and the one now available in the Janty DK series. What I gather now is that the lost Dekang, while famous, wasn't the original RY4 released, and the less famous Janty was the first and can be had as the DK. So that means the "lost" is still lost? And the Janty Classic is fairly close in flavor to the lost and famous Dekang one?

Actually, after vaping some straight tobaccos for a few hours and now vaping GJ4 on a clean wick, I'd like to alter a bit what I said about GJ4 in my previous post. Though the tobacco has indeed became more pronounced with age, it still has a very nice balance of caramel, vanilla, and tobacco. It's still quite delicous. I think before, going from Our RY4 to GJ4, made me notice just the tobacco aspect more compared to now going from strait tobaccos to GJ4.

This reminds me that though switching flavors often and using different juice delivery systems helps me to better understand a juice, so does the ORDER that I vape my juices in.

Jerms,

The recipe/formula for Dekang RY4 didn't "disappear" in May 2010 or thereabouts. It was taken by the departing flavor chemist, who intended no doubt to offer it as part of the juice line-up for his own soon-to-start-up juice company. The Chinese may steal business secrets from outside their country with an abandon that borders on glee, but they take very seriously the theft of intellectual property within China by Chinese nationals. That flavor chemist was subsequently arrested, charged with theft, tried, and convicted. As of 2011, he was still serving his sentence in a Chinese prison. The most reliable behind-the-scenes account I've heard suggests that the formula was destroyed to prevent its being used as evidence, and thus will never be recovered. That’s what I was told, anyway.

Over the years, Janty has sold six distinct versions of RY4. To call them variations on a theme would leave the misimpression of their covering a broad flavor spectrum, when they are all actually very similar. Of the various Janty versions, Janty RY4 Elixir (in either PG or VG) was the most popular and probably the closest to the lost Dekang, but "close" is a relative term. From what I gather, the 2009-2010 Dekang was sweeter than any Janty RY4 ever made, almost more of a sweetened caramel-tobacco blend than a typical RY4. Also, all the Janty versions I've tasted (which includes RY4 DK, both RY4 Elixirs, and RY4-X Classic) have, to varying degrees, a sour element that counterbalances and brings out the sweetness by contrast. That sourness is subtle and neutral in flavor (meaning that it's not acidic or fruity, like citrus, but rather a straight sourness). Dekang RY4s have never had any sourness.

Recently, Janty has begun the "RY numbers game" (as practiced by Hangsen and Dekang), offering newer versions called RY1, RY2, and RY7, in addition to their existing stable of RY4s.

Differences between what is offered on the Janty's European site (JantyWorld) and its U.S. site (JantyUSA) are bewildering. All the various versions are sold on the European site, but all DK-Series juices are offered only in 10ml bottles. By contrast, the Vitaya and Abaca Series eliquids (each of which includes more than one RY4) are not offered at all on the U.S. site, and the DK-Series liquids are sold only in 20ml bottles. I don't know enough about the structure or operation of Janty as one or more companies to understand why this is so.

Both web sites describe RY4 Elixir PG and VG as “The original Janty RY4 best seller, introduced on the market in 2007.” According to Ludo---co-creator of the original RY4, one of Janty's owners, and my main source for historical information about Janty RY4---however, that ad copy description is incorrect. Ludo has stated unequivocally that Janty RY4 DK-Series is his own original RY4 formula, the same one sold by Janty from 2007-2009, and that the Elixir RY4s are revisions with an altered recipe profile.

What??? You mean it's arrived, and yet you haven't vaped any yet? We're awaiting your opinion and judgment with bated breath.

Sorry been real busy ......Anyways I am saying this not not to complain but just to make note, First I do not have any Janty DK RY4 left from the US side but I wish I did just to confirm this. The Janty DK RY4 seems different from the US and here is the reasons. The nic seems to be stronger, I ordered what they have as LOW and and the US side its 6mg, the throat hit and all around flavor is different and that may be the reason and plus my head can tell :confused:also it just seems sharper less sweet, the whole experience is sharp with a light sweet touch at the top. Like I said I am not complaining but there is a big difference going on. So I like the US better becuz it is more mellow with a the best classic RY4 taste I can find. I am taking it as the nic is stronger which adjust these different things becuz surely they would not have two different mixes for different countries ....

Maybe JantyWorld (Europe) s using 12mg - 18mg - 24 mg as Low, Medium, High, in which case you're getting twice the nicotine you're accustomed to. I daresay that would sharpen up the perceived flavor profile considerably, and not in a direction you'd like.

Juices not tasting like you expected them to taste seems to be a plague on your house recently. Well, maybe not a plague, but at least a multiple occurrence. (I'm thinking of the second batch of diy w2v RY4 that didn't taste the same to you as the first bottle.) Damn. That's no fun at all. It'd be different if the juices were mysteriously twice as good as you expected, but not as good really stinks.

my vote goes to mister-e-liquids ry4, it's the only ry4 i even care for. it's actually in my top 5 juices

Daniel,

It's great that you found an RY4 you love.

I can't help but ask about your second statement: "it's the only RY4 I even care for." Personally, I've vaped (and reviewed) more than 120 RY4s, but even that number leaves another 100 or more RY4s that I haven't tried.

How many RY4s have you tried? Five? Ten? Twenty? Even if it's twenty, then that means you haven't vaped about 200 other RY4s. Maybe there are some you haven't tried that you'd like a lot. Just sayin'.

Another consideration is what delivery method are you using and at what wattage/voltage? Every juice I vape has varations from a carto to a tank or clearomizer and then more variations at different watts/volts. Plus, my taste buds evolve more as time passes from my last analog.

I am going on my first year anniversary of vaping and have only tried 30 or so RY4's, so there are many more that I have not tried. My goal is to find a handful of RY4's that I like well and alternate between them so as to NOT get burned out on any one juice. I have accomplished this and am thankful for it. And, some juices one may not like at first may turn into a favorite down the road. Expample for me - Halo Tribeca. I could hardly vape my first bottle until after at least a month of steeping and even then, did not really care that much for it. After two more months of steeping, it was wonderful.

So, to each his/her own - whatever our goals/desires are hopefully we can reach them. If that means one favorite RY4 fills the need, great! I cannot settle with just one (or even 4 or 5 for that matter) and still sample new/different RY4's from time to time. Just last month I found a new RY4 that I really like and is now added to my short favorite list (Mountain Oak Vapor Full Virginal Flake). No doubt another juice will be added to my short list in future.

So, keep all the reviews and comments coming - sooner or later another juice will be among my faves. It may take several samples to find it, but that is part of the fun - we have so many options.

I agree with this so much. As a longtime dripper who alternates between different types of atties, and recently the RBA, I have found each atty has it's own strengths and weaknesses with flavor. Even the two same style and brand atties can have some variation. For some reason, some atties bring out or mute certain flavor notes to change the experience. With each juice I try it on a few different atties in my current atty rotation (every 2-3 days different atty to clean previous one). Very often, a juice pairs with one or two of them as performing best and I tend to use those groups of juice with that atty.

I have one strange Cisco 306 right now, that I swear is only capable of producing fruit properly. Any desert or tobacco tastes almost flavorless in it, but switch to a fruit vape and it's one of the best I've had. Even a tobacco/fruit hybrid, it will bring out the fruit perfectly while totally muting the tobacco. In the last couple months I've had little desire for pure fruit vapes, so kind of hate that atty lol.

Both On Target's and Jerms' posts are eloquent in illuminating factors of critical importance in the vaping experience that are too often overlooked, or ignored when we post our "I liked Juice A but hated Juice B" opinions.

Sure, sometimes it is the juices themselves that we like or don't, but not always. Hardware matters. To say, "I like BWB Cappuccino" might at times be stated more accurately as "I like BWB Cappuccino vaped in a Bauway 1.8 ohm clearo powered by a VAMO set to 7.5 watts."

Obviously, if the juice was sampled seven different ways---dripped in a standard atty, dripped in a high-end RBA, carto- and clearo-loaded, in a DCT tank, etc.---and it was either great or lousy in every setup, then a simple blanket statement applies. I wonder how many of us are willing to go to such extreme length before pronouncing judgment on a given juice. For me to try more than two methods---atty-dripped and in a carto/clearo/tank---almost never happens. And yet, like so many of us, I go right ahead and share my opinions.

I think I understand at least some of the reasons that such detailed, carefully qualified disclosures aren't common on ECF and other Forums, and I doubt that we'll see any wholesale changes in the quick-'n-dirty nature of ECF posting, but more specific and informative judgments are certainly welcome. Opinions are a big part of what we share here on ECF, and that's fine, but accurate reporting makes those opinions more trustworthy and useful.

specs: Thanks in part to the efforts of ECF member 440BB, Dawn at DIYFlavorShack was very kind and generous in sending me 15ml bottles of all six of her RY4s at no charge for review. Each is 24mg nic strength in an unspecified PG/VG base blend. Four of the RY4s are currently listed on the DIYFlavorShack web site. Two are not.

All six juices are transparent liquids. Here are their colors and noses:

RY4: Golden caramel color, with a pleasant caramel-vanilla scent
Caramel RY4: Medium caramel color, with a slight caramel scent
Caramel & Vanilla RY4: Deep caramel color, with the surprising smell of vanilla
Sweet RY4: Deep caramel color, with the strong scent of caramel
RY4 Aces: Clear, almost colorless, with almost no smell
Holy Holy Grail RY4: Pale peach, with a very light caramel scent

Testing was done by atty-dripping, using a 2.5 ohm IKV io6 atomizer powered by a VAMO set to 9 watts RMS.

Dawn’s Descriptions on the DIYFlavorShack web site product pages:

RY4: This is a very nice flavor with a Caramel undertone.
Caramel RY4: This is a very nice flavor with a Load of Caramel undertone. I have added Caramel to this E-liquid.
Caramel & Vanilla RY4: This is a very nice flavor with a Load of Caramel and Vanilla undertone. I have added Caramel and Vanilla per a customers request and it is soooo good
Holy Holy Grail RY4: It is THE BEST. This is a very nice flavor THAT I HAVE BEEN WORKING ON FOR A VERY LONG TIME... and it is soooo good.
[Note: Sweet RY4 and RY4 Aces are not currently listed on the web site.]
Taste and Comparisons: All of these RY4s share a certain idionsyncratic heritage, based on the particular flavorings Dawn uses, which I'd consider custom (as opposed to standard, off-the-shelf flavorings, especially for the caramel and vanilla). These juices aren't typical RY4s, which may or may not be a positive attribute, depending on the individual vaper’s palate. If you like one, you'll probably like all six, but some other vapers may not warm up to any of them. The tobacco is mild and neutral in all six, but the caramel and vanilla flavorings vary from slightly eccentric to boldly unusual in taste and their contribution to the overall experience. Each juice produces ample vapor.

RY4: I reviewed this liquid on January 18th, 2012 in post #1072 as a conservative Custom RY4, and I still have most of that 20ml bottle, but the RY4 in this new 15ml bottle tastes very different. In part, that’s because the new bottle is 24mg rather than the earlier 16mg version, so the RY4 I’m vaping right now is much punchier, with a more pronounced throat hit. It’s also somewhat more eccentric than my earlier version. In the new sample, the interaction of the caramel and vanilla, both abundant in the mix, produces a flavor that tastes (to me) almost more like butterscotch. Some vapers may like that very much; I was a little confused by it. I guess I’d call this an atypical RY4---not bad, but something of an acquired taste.

Caramel RY4: This one is similar to Dawn’s original Custom RY4, as it should be, since it merely adds an extra shot of caramel. That extra caramel does change the flavor profile a little, however. I don’t pick up any butterscotch from this one, just caramel that’s reminiscent of chewy caramel candies, although less sweet and almost nutty. I’d guess that the nuttiness I taste is not a separate flavoring, but a side effect of the specific caramel flavoring used.

Caramel-Vanilla RY4: This version was also reviewed on January 18th, 2012, in post #1073.
A further variation on the theme, this time with additional caramel and vanilla, so that the tobacco base is slightly diminished (not overwhelmed, just sort of pushed to the side), and the resulting flavor profile is extremely rich, although not especially sweet. it’s not quite buttery, but leans in that direction. The caramel and vanilla dance around each other quite happily, more than in the straight RY4. I like this one, and much prefer it over the older juice of the same name that I reviewed last year.

Sweet RY4: Very similar to RY4 and Caramel RY4, except sweeter. But not cloying sweet, by any means. In fact, this is much less sweet than many of the RY4s in the Sweet/Dessert group of the RY4 Category Groups. Dawn seems to have mixed this version with considerable restraint. Personally, I’d judge it as not sweet enough to be clearly different from Dawn’s parent RY4, on which it’s based. My advice to Dawn would be to kick up the sweetness another notch or two before adding it to the web site.

RY4 Aces: To use the famous Monty Python running gag line: “And now for something completely different.” All four of the previous RY4s have been Custom all the way. This one, however, seems to be Dawn’s take on the Classic RY4 flavor profile. And a very nice effort it is, too. Although not quite perfectly Classic---the flavors don’t truly meld into oneness---RY4 Aces shares the bright treble notes and pale color of other Classic RY4s. I think it’s very smart of Dawn to offer a Classic version, even if this one doesn’t quite rank with the very best of the Classic RY4s.

Holy Holy Grail RY4: According to the descriptions, this is Dawn’s “ultimate” RY4 and her favorite. To me, it is the most adventurous of her six RY4s, and the one that pushes the flavor envelope furthest. While still retaining some of the idiosyncratic signature elements of the particular ingredient flavorings that Dawn uses, this juice stands apart from the other five in end result. I really can’t tell if I like it or not, but it’s certainly distinctive. If Dawn is your preferred flavorist/juicemaker, get this one.

My personal, subjective grades for the six DIYFlavorShack RY4s (in descending order):

Caramel-Vanilla RY4---B+, extremely rich and very flavorful, for me the pick of this litter
RY4 Aces---B, an interesting, almost Classic RY4 that's a nice change of pace
Holy Holy Grail RY4---B, if you love Dawn’s juices, get this one
Caramel RY4---B-, better than the base RY4 in my opinion, but still…
RY4---C+, a Custom RY4 whose eccentricity makes it somewhat hit-or-miss
Sweet RY4---C-, not sweet enough, thus not ready for prime time

Reviewing the six DIYFlavorShack RY4s last night stimulated in me a further recognition of certain essential truths about RY4s. Since those are on my mind right now, I want to post them before they fade back into the woodwork.

RY4 is a juice flavor that---by its very nature---works best when the flavoring ingredients used are “normal,” which is to say, very close to the center of the bell curve in terms of collective expectation about their taste. But we don't have just one tobacco flavor, one caramel flavor, or one vanilla flavor. All three of RY4’s Holy Trinity of core ingredient flavorings are available in flavor profiles that cover an amazingly wide range of tastes and flavor shadings.

For instance, vanilla is not just vanilla, despite the double-entendre. No, vanilla flavoring comes in a myriad of different variations---natural vanilla extract, synthetic lab-based vanilla flavoring, sharp vanilla, soft vanilla, creamy vanilla, pungent vanilla, vanilla bean, vanilla custard, etc. The same is true of caramel and, of course, tobacco flavors.

One of the profound but not always obvious truths about RY4 is that these three flavor ingredients work best together when they combine in such a way as to end up tasting exactly as we expect them to taste. Generally speaking, the best Classic RY4s use a mild and neutral tobacco base, a caramel (or caramels, since more than one flavoring of each of the core ingredients may be used) that is sweet and pleasant, and a vanilla that’s more soft than sharp or harsh. To achieve the blended overall flavor that is such an important characteristic of Classic RY4s, each core ingredient should ideally contain no flavor elements that stand out or call attention to themselves. Each one---tobacco, caramel, and vanilla---should be a team player, not a star. Normal and simple generally produce a much tastier result than odd or complex.

Custom RY4s alter this formula in either or both of two ways: First, they may change the proportions of core ingredients in the recipe mix, so that one flavoring takes center stage limelight. Thus, all RY4s that have obviously stronger tobacco, or more caramel, or more vanilla, are---by definition---Custom RY4s. Second, a Custom RY4 may introduce unusual flavoring elements into the juice, either within any of the three core ingredients or through additional flavorings added to the mix. In this second way of altering the Classic formula, it’s not the proportional ratios of the core ingredients that call attention to one or more of them, but rather the nature of the core flavorings themselves. They deviate from the normal expectations into the realm of uniqueness, idiosyncrasy, or just plain eccentricity.

My recent review of NET-based RY4s is a perfect example of this. Ahlusion Gold Rising and QuickNicVapor ouR whY qu4tro both use natural tobacco extracts made from tobacco varieties that have a unique signature. They are not mild and neutral tobacco bases, but instead bold and highly distinctive flavors that call attention to themselves.

When we vape RY4, our brains should be in their comfort zones. We should say, “Ah, RY4,” and not “Wait. What is this?” Or we might react with “Wow, that’s different, but it sure is good!” In other words, RY4 is not designed to make us question or reach for appreciation. Our pleasure is supposed to be immediate and built-in.

Therefore, all Custom RY4s are running a risk, in essence, playing with fire. By pushing the flavor envelope, either by altering the proportions of basic ingredients or by adding unusual flavor elements (whether in the core ingredients or through additional flavorings), they are taking the road less traveled---and less safe. When either strategy works well for a given Custom RY4, the result is brilliant. If either or both strategies falter, however---causing the vaper to react by thinking, “Wait, what is this?”---the juice has failed as an RY4.

The challenge for all Classic RY4s is to hit the middle of the bell curve perfectly, with flavors that are not only balanced but unified. To whatever extent the vaper can sense an imbalance of core ingredients, the juice fails as a Classic RY4. Similarly, to whatever extent the vaper can easily distinguish the core ingredients as separate flavors, the juice also fails. To make a superb Classic RY4, the ingredients must complement and blend with each other. If they clash or don't meld well, that's bad. Other factors exist, of course---brightness, for instance---but recipe balance and the union of flavors into oneness are critical.

RY4 is not supposed to be an acquired taste that takes time and learning to appreciate. RY4s shouldn’t have to “grow on you.” You should love them from the first vape. If you don't, something's wrong. On rare occasions delayed appreciation eventually succeeds, but not very often. No, RY4---whether Classic or Custom---is supposed to be immediately enjoyable, with no effort, no stretching of the palate and brain. RY4 is the equivalent in vaping of comfort food in cuisine. It’s burgers and fries, steak and potatoes, peanut butter and jelly. It’s doughnuts. What RY4 is not is sushi, umeboshi plum, Kim Chee, or baba ghanoush, however delicious those delicacies may be to the sophisticated palate.

The problem I encounter with Dawn’s RY4s---all of them, actually---is that they are not instantly comfortable. Something in either the taste of the core ingredients used or the way they interact gets in the way of my immediate enjoyment. Obviously, this doesn’t happen when Dawn vapes her own creations. For her, they are flat-out yummy, no doubt. For me, however, they are something of a stretch---the “acquired taste” syndrome---and I’m willing to bet that my palate is closer to the general vaping population’s than Dawn’s is. That’s why I can’t give any of DIYFlavorshack’s RY4 an A or A- grade. RY4s that get top grades from me don’t make me work to enjoy them. They are like gifts delivered on a silver platter, and my joy at receiving them is instantaneous..

I am really enjoying some MOV Full Virginia Flake today - it has the core essentials of an RY4 just as Bill described above. Since this is a Naturally Extracted Tobacco, the throat hit is strong - almost harsh - if not toned down on the voltage/wattage (18mg nic). I have it loaded in a CE3 Clearomizer on a VAMO set to 8 watts RMS. I typically start out at 6.5 watts and work my way up to no higher than 8, after that the tobacco is too harsh for me. The flavor comes across as one very well balanced RY4 and I just LOVE this new line of "Premium Tennessee E-Liquid" from MOV. Heck, it just keeps getting better with more steeping time (born on 2/18/13). If this keeps up, BWB's RY4 is going to be in a battle for my all around number one RY4.

On Target,

I agree that MOV Full Virginia Flake is a wonderful RY4. It manages to straddle the lines between synthetic tobacco flavoring and NETs, and also between Classic and Custom RY4s. Quite a balancing act, but MOV FVF RY4 pulls it off beautifully.

In my original review, I mistakenly attributed creation of this juice to Brandy at MOV. Let me correct that error here. Brandy and Steve are partners and co-owners of MOV. Brandy tends to develop most of the non-tobacco juice flavors, while Steve works more on the tobacco blend side. So, Steve is the person to be congratulated for Full Virginia Flake. I continue to be very impressed by it and consider this juice to be Steve's finest creation.

I agree also about 8 watts being the "Baby Bear's Porridge" sweet spot. More heat than that does tend to overamp the tobacco into harshness, roughly analogous to distortion in the audio world. With FVF RY4 at 9 watts, I start coughing. 8 watts, however, is just right. In a perfect universe, I'd make the NET element slightly milder, but kick up the throat hit (since throat hit is a measure of impact and not the same as harshness). That's just nit-picking, though---MOV FVF RY4 is darned good as it is.

I just received my order, which have a bottled date of 2/28/13. Does anyone else find the MOV RY4 tastes like perfume? I realize I need to let them steep but I had to have a taste after reading all the glowing reviews. Will leaving the caps off for a few days remove the chemical aftertaste?

specs: The 15ml bottle of Full Virginia Flake RY4 I purchased for review from MountainOakVapors is an NET-based limited edition. The liquid inside the dark glass dropper-topped bottle is a transparent medium-caramel color at 18mg nic strength in a 70/30 PG/VG base blend. A subtle caramel is the only scent I can discern after ten days of steeping. Testing was done using a 2.5 ohm Smoktech dual-coil carto powered by a variable-wattage VAMO set to 9 watts RMS.

The MOV web-page description states:

“FULL VIRGINIA FLAKE RY4 is a Limited Edition (while supplies last) NET RY4 E-Liquid blend from Mountain Oak Vapors™. What is NET? you ask? It's a Naturally Extracted Tobacco flavoring that we have extracted ourselves in house using Full Virginia Flake pipe tobacco. To that we add a bit of Caramel and Vanilla flavoring to make it an authentic RY4 experience. The extraction process for this particular limited edition run has taken around 3 months to produce from start to finish and is made possible by a famous Full Virginia Flake pipe tobacco from which the tobacco base flavoring was derived. In house Naturally Extracted Tobacco flavorings are NOT approved by the FDA for food based consumption. This is the only NET Blend Mountain Oak Vapors™ has available for sale, and it is the only one that uses NET flavoring that we have ever sold.”

My first reaction to this Custom RY4 is to be very impressed by how well-blended the juice is. Brandy, MOV’s juicemaker, has assembled a symphony orchestra of individual flavors that play together beautifully as one coordinated instrument. Every phase of the vaping experience, from inhale through exhale, is perfectly in tune and in synch for this lovely concerto. Neither overly sweet nor excessively rich, but offering great depth, the music of Full Virginia Flake RY4 is perfectly balanced.

In my opinion, this is Brandy’s finest creation, the best tobacco juice I’ve ever had from MOV. In the past, I felt that MOV’s tobacco blends embodied a certain characteristic eccentricity of flavor profile, which some people loved, while others didn’t. One colleague of mine referred to the oddness as “cumin-like.” In Full Virginia Flake RY4, that falls away, because of the wonderful NET tobacco base, which provides a firm base for the tasty caramel and vanilla and a flavor that is both authentic and delicious. The overall flavor of this juice is a dead center bull's-eye. Totally delicious.

If Custom RY4s are the evolutionary future, then Custom RY4s made with natural extract tobacco bases are the vanguard, the spearhead of that movement. But not all NETs are the same. In fact, they vary wildly in quality. With the MOV Virginia Flake NET, Brandy has produced a superb extract with complexity and deeply satisfying flavor. The juice has no nuttiness, but what it does have is a toasted quality that adds a similar flavor element to the mix. Vapers who don’t like nutty RY4s won’t mind at all, while those who do like nuts will appreciate this toastiness. I detect a slight sourness, which doesn’t seem to me a separate flavor ingredient, but more likely a natural layer of the tobacco extract. This is altogether pleasing and adds to the juice’s complexity. Tobacco lovers can rejoice, since there’s none of the grassiness that mars some NET macerations.

My sole criticism of this RY4 is the lack of a really solid throat hit, which is primarily a function of the nic level and purity, as well as the power used to heat the coils. 18mg nic should provide more throat hit than I'm getting at 9 watts. That lack of TH detracts from my enjoyment ever-so-slightly---enough to keep MOV Full Virginia Flake RY4 out of the A group, but only by a hair. However, A- ain’t too shabby, since both groups together represent the very best RY4s in the world.

Since we don’t know if MOV will decide to continue down the path of NETs and make Full Virginia Flake RY4 a standard offering in their juice line, I’d strongly advise anyone interested to get some now, before this limited edition is sold out.

Amirite,

Steeping would seem to be the next logical step (other than more drastic measures, such as pouring the juice down the drain, consigning it to your juice dungeon, or contacting MOV to ask for a replacement or refund). Caps off may or may not help to achieve the desired outcome, but it shouldn't hurt.

Post numbers of reviews are active links that will open a new page of your browser and display the linked review (making it unnecessary to hunt through the pages of the thread to find a specific review, which was always a royal pain). Also, RY4s by Category Groups will now appear in a separate post.

I've tried to include all the notable reviews of RY4s that have been posted by other people, but I may have missed some. (It's hard enough just keeping track of my own reviews. LOL). I don't link to posts that just say, "I like such-and-such RY4," only to real reviews with some meat on their bones. RY4 reviews by others are listed in the vendor and review post number links, followed by their ECF names.

The Big RY4 List has seven sections:

1. RY4 Reviews - Classic and Custom Retail RY4s, with links to the vendor’s product page and post number links to the initial reviews and occasionally to follow-up reviews, mostly by Bill, but also by other thread posters (who are named)
2. RY4s not yet acquired for review
3. RY4s that are no longer available for one reason or another
4. Bill’s Reviews of Other Juices (non-RY4s)
5. Bill’s Reviews of RY4 premixed DIY Flavoring Concentrates
6. Vaping Commentaries
7. Bill's Personal and Current Top 10 Favorite RY4s
