All-in-one RY4 pre-mixed DIY flavorings---with mix percentages, Report Card, vendor links, and review posts

Mixing Percentages
The key to making good DIY RY4 from Pre-Mixed RY4 flavorings and concentrates is knowing how much (or rather, how little) flavoring to use. Flavorings require a higher percentage; concentrates work at lower percentages. Use too much of either and you will ruin the juice. I cannot stress this strongly enough. Start out mixing lean. Then---if necessary---add more flavoring very sparingly. Test-vape after each small addition of flavor. Keep in mind that the flavors will “bloom” with steeping---a DIY RY4 that seems to lack flavor when new may magically mature into full-flavor after two weeks, so exercise both patience and restraint.

When making a small bottle of DIY RY4 (6mls or less) using a very concentrated flavoring, adding even two drops to an existing mix can be enough to wreck the flavor profile. Increase the flavoring only one drop at a time. Remember: Less is best, and more is not necessarily better. Err on the side of using too little flavoring rather than too much! Below are my recommended percentages for different brands of RY4 flavorings:

2-4%
TobaccoExpress Ruyan and RY4 concentrates
VapingZone RY4 super-concentrated flavoring

5-7%
DecadentVapours DY3 and DY4 flavorings
FlavourArt Legend RY4 flavoring concentrate
FlavourArt oRYental4 flavoring concentrate
FlavourArtUK Nutzilla flavoring concentrate
Hangsen Essence RY4 flavoring concentrate
HealthCabin Ruyan #4 (RY4) flavoring concentrate

6-9%
TPA/TFA RY4 Double and RY4 Asian flavorings

8-10%
AzureVaping RY4 and RY4.5 flavorings (formerly BlueMist)
MtBakerVapor RY4 flavoring

10-20%
Want2Vape RY4 and Rock Star flavorings

Texas Vet,

I'm posting the two-month update of The Big RY4 List today, so check my personal Top 20 retail RY4s (at the bottom of the first of the four posts).

As for non-RY4s, here are some retail juices I'm vaping now:

GoodLifeVapor El Kamino
GoodLifeVapor Deadly Sin
want2vape Creamy Espresso (DIY'd from concentrate)
BWB Cappuccino & Espresso
CopperCreek Espresso
Hangsen and TotallyWicked Turkish (DIY'd from concentrates; they may be the same juice)

Everything else is I vape is pretty much my own home-brewed NETs and/or home-made DIY juices.

Thanks and thanks for the Really Big RY4 Roundup. Between this and the Natural Tobacco thread there is juice 'To Infinity and Beyond!!'

We vapors are Happy, Happy, Happy....

I took with me in to work this weekend VaporStation's VS4 at 24mg nic in an Evod. Too high nic for me to vape in a dripper at home, but a great level on the go.

This RY4 really grabbed me and just based on this weekend vaping I consider it one of my personal favorites. It's different and unique while still being very much an RY4. Not sure how I'd describe the flavor, I don't think about what I'm vaping much in depth unless vaping at home, and VS4 also seemed like a hard one to describe anyways.

The tobacco is stronger than other synthetic RY4s I've had. It's neutral and typical as a good RY4 is, but it's a stronger neutral, I just notice it more. The sweetness plays different than other RY4s I've had too. Whether it's a different sweetner or different caramel and vanilla flavors I can't say. Whatever it is, I like the flavor a lot.

Everything is different but it's still the RY4 flavor I enjoy. I wish I could describe it better, but being vague is the best I can do for now. I'll get a bottle of it at my normal nic level so I can enjoy it at home to understand it better.

It really was fun to have this with me this weekend. One of my best RY4 experiences and one of the best on-the-go vapes I've had.

Oh yeah, also finished off my BWB RY4 this weekend. I enjoyed the bottle quite a bit, the last few ml it was really making an impression. Very impressive, I see why many were upset to see it discontinued. Easily the best BWB tobacco I've had, which for me isn't saying much, but also one of the best RY4 I've had.

My personal favorite RY4 juices in no particular order..

GJ4 from GeJ
Tribeca from Halo
VS4 from VaporStation
R-YLD-4 from VapingXtreme
RY4 Classic from Janty
Janty 2009-2010 edition RY4
RY4 from BWB

Of course, my RY4 experience is a drop in the bucket compared to many others in this thread, but all these I found worthy of reordering (except the 2 that I can't).

VaporStation VS4 is a very distinctive Custom RY4. Stronger tobacco, but still nicely balanced. It does have an unusual flavor; I don't know if it's the tobacco flavoring or the caramel/vanilla. I'd guess that it's the tobacco. But then, VaporStation liquids are the only juices I know that are manufactured by a flavoring company in India, so cultural differences in the flavorings might be a factor.

I've been around the block with VS4 more than a couple times. I loved the first bottles I bought in early 2011, then gradually fell out of love with it. In 2012, I had a burst of really liking it again, but that paled over some months. Then I bought my third bottle in June 2013, and now I like it again. Go figure.

For anyone wanting an RY4 that isn't run-of-the-mill and is off the beaten path, VS4 is a great choice.

Want2Vape RY4 (flavoring - NET-based custom)

...seems to be the only NET-based DIY RY4. With good fortune, that category will expand.

I've been mixing some of that with a tobacco Bill suggested to me and some other flavorings. The tobacco is TPA (Honey?)Flue Cured. I add a bit of FlavourArt Vanilla Bourbon and Caramel.

As usual this is a really good list..been waiting Mr. Bill. I have been a big follower (behind the scenes) for the last 3 months. I have tried a lot of your suggestions and have been very pleased. My favorite suggestions have turned out to be myvapejuice Rogue RY4, Rogue RY4 with spice (excellently reviewed by luceblueboy) and MOV Full Virginia Flake. Without this list, I would have wasted unnecessary time and money. Thank you for your wonderful lists!

Specs: The 6ml sample bottle of Throat Yogurt from VapeSyndicate that the hangdude sent me contains a medium-to-dark caramel-colored liquid. The nose is barely discernible, but pleasing. Nic strength and base ratios were unspecified on the bottle. Testing was done by dripping into a 2.3 ohm JoyeTech standard 510 atomizer powered by a VAMO set to provide 9 watts RMS.

Here’s the text description from Throat Yogurt’s product page on the VapeSyndicate site:

“Soooo creamy and thick you can feel it as it goes down, dont let it fool you, it has quite a throat hit! This is our take on RY-4 with a heavy butterscotch front. Many people think RY-4 is a tobacco liquid, this definitely IS NOT. You’ll find complexity in the simplicity of the flavors. So just put it in your mouth, you’ll thank me later.”

Well, maybe not.

If Throat Yogurt isn’t a “tobacco liquid,” does that mean that it has no tobacco flavoring? If it doesn’t, it’s not an RY4. I can’t tell, though. The taste is sort of tobacco-ish (but not much), sort of butterscotch-ey (but not “heavy” as the description states), and yes, it does have major throat hit. Major. It also has substantial thickness of mouthfeel.

I knew after a couple of tokes that Throat Yogurt was destined to get lumped into the B- group on The Really Big RY4 Report Card. It’s not that I don’t like Throat Yogurt, I’m just not particularly enamored with it. To me, Throat Yogurt is OK, easily vapeable, but not particularly special or noteworthy. Another in the long line of run-of-the-mill USA-made Custom RY4s, where its idiosyncrasies are just that---eccentricities---and don't make it better.

The one on-site review suggested the slight background presence of menthol or another cooling agent, but I didn’t get that. Oddly enough, what I got as background was yogurt. Maybe that was simply the power of suggestion because of the name.

Don’t let my lukewarm response deter you, however. Some folks might love this slightly unusual take on RY4. For me, it’s all right, but no better than just all right.

Specs: The sample of Ripple Effects RY4 from CigTechs that the hangdude sent me is a a medium-caramel-colored liquid (almost exactly the same color as Throat Yogurt). The nose had no scent that I could detect. Nic strength is 24mg, and the base blend is 50/50 PG/VG. Testing was done by dripping into a 2.3 ohm JoyeTech standard 510 atomizer powered by a VAMO set to provide 9 watts RMS.

This is another USA-made Custom RY4. In fact, it’s from CigTechs’ Custom Order Tobaccos, where the customer selects from pull-down menus six different variables, including flavor. So, it’s not only a Custom RY4, it’s a made-to-order Custom RY4.

Compared to Throat Yogurt, Ripple Effects RY4 is more immediately identifiable as an RY4. Is that a good thing? In this case, not so much, because RE RY4 tastes to me like something tossed together in a kitchen rather than a carefully-formulated RY4. Oh, it has the Holy Trinity, all right---tobacco, caramel, and vanilla---but I’m not sure the particular flavorings used complement each other all that well. That happens with some custom RY4s. They should taste better than they do. I mean, c’mon, how can you screw up tobacco, caramel, and vanilla? Easily enough, as it turns out. I know from first-hand experience that making a great or even good RY4 from scratch is not nearly as simple as grabbing that trio of flavorings off the shelf and mixing up a juice with all three. With all the different varieties of tobacco, caramel, and vanilla flavorings, finding three that can really sing together in tune and in harmony is much harder than one might think.

Something is amiss here, and I’m not sure what it is. The flavors are present, and the RY4-ness is apparent, but the overall sum is less than the parts.

Writing negative reviews doesn’t make me happy, but I can’t recommend Ripple Effects RY4. It just doesn’t pass muster for me.

Specs: The 10ml bottle of Old #4 from S&SMods sent to me by the hangdude contains a golden-colored transparent liquid at 24mg nic strength in a 50/50 PG/VG base. Nose of the liquid is subtle but distinct, and slightly acrid. Inhaled deeply, the scent has a bit of sting. Testing was done by dripping into a 2.3 ohm JoyeTech standard 510 atomizer powered by a VAMO set to provide 9 watts RMS.

From the description of Old #4 on the product page of the S&Smods web site, I wasn’t sure that Old #4 was an RY4:

“This is our take on a nice Analog.Very nice tobacco flavor with a middle to high strength in flavor. A must for the Analog lovers.”
Now that I’ve vaped some Old #4, I’m still not sure, although the more I vape it, the more certain I become that Old #4 is a tobacco blend and not an RY4. Two of the six on-site customer reviews refer to RY4. One says, “This tastes like the ry4 I bought when I first started this years ago.” The other states, “As the name suggests, RY4. it's lovely as when I started vaping.”

Were these customers actually vaping back in 2006? That’s back at the very beginnings of ecigarettes, when only four eliquids were available, all marketed by The Ruyan Company, and called Ruyan #1, Ruyan #2, Ruyan #3, and Ruyan #4. The last of those---Ruyan #4---was far and away the most popular, and is reported to have been a sweetened tobacco flavor. That’s what Old #4 tastes like---a sweet synthetic tobacco with a sharp bite.

Many vapers believe (usually based on what they've read on ECF and elsewhere) that RY4 was formulated to replicate Ruyan #4. Not so. RY4 is it’s own creature---an original flavor blend---and not a replica of anything. The “RY” in the name was chosen as an homage to The Ruyan Company (which patented and sold the very first commercial ecigs), but the “4” was not a reference to Ruyan #4. Instead, the creators of RY4 (two men: Ludo, who was and still is one of the owners of Janty, and a Dekang flavor chemist), named their creation RY4 because the version they liked best was the fourth variation they made that day, the same exact version that Janty began marketing as RY4 in 2007.

So, with all that in mind, I’ll conclude that Old #4 is an attempt to replicate Ruyan #4, but it's not an RY4 according to our definition on this thread. As a result, Old #4 won’t be included on The Big RY4 List, and I won’t give it a grade. I will, though, provide a link for those who want to purchase Old #4. As a tobacco blend, it's not half bad.

Specs: The 5ml sample of Butterfly’s RY4 from Butterfly’s eJuices sent to me by the hangdude is a pale yellow transparent liquid, so pale that it’s almost clear, at 24mg nic strength in an 80/20 PG/VG base. I pick up hardly any scent, but what little there is is quite pleasant. Testing was done first by dripping into a 2.3 ohm JoyeTech standard 510 atomizer, then in a 2.8 ohm Ultimate CE2 clearomizer. Both atty and clearo were powered by a VAMO set to provide 9 watts RMS.

Ah, finally! An RY4 in this batch that’s worthy of the name!

Make no mistake, this is a very, very good RY4. Mostly Classic, in that Butterfly’s RY4 is a pale color, with a flavor profile that’s bright and beautifully balanced. There is an element of Custom RY4 in the juice, however, because the three primary flavors can be distinguished individually rather than melding into a single final taste. The distinctiveness of each flavor isn't as pronounced as in many Custom RY4s, and the overall flavor shines right through.

In this crossover mode of Classic-with-a-little-Custom, Butterfly’s RY4 resembles Mr.Vape RY4 and has a similar flavor profile, but the two juices are not identical in taste. I’m also reminded of Vaper’sKnoll OuR-Y4, although Butterfly’s is closer to Mr.Vape than to Vaper’sKnoll. The RY4 that's closest in flavor to Butterfly’s is JoyeTech RY4, with the caveat that my sample of Butterfly’s is 80/20 PG/VG, whereas my bottle of JoyeTech RY4 is all-VG, which may account for the slight differences. Butterfly’s is punchier with more kick, while JoyeTech’s is smoother and, as one might expect from an all-VG base, a tad sweeter with more copious vapor production. The fact that I even mention those three other RY4s in this review shows that I consider Butterfly’s to be a superb RY4 that deserves and invites comparisons to some of the finest RY4s in the world. Although personal preferences play a big part in judging “best” RY4s, to my palate Butterfly’s is every bit as good as the three RY4s mentioned above.

Even average RY4s can be pretty decent vapes, but it’s the superlative ones---Butterfly’s among them---that make RY4 the special flavor blend it is, with near-universal appeal.

No “USA-made” claim appears on Butterfly’s web site, but the “About Us” page does state that Butterfly’s juices are not pre-mixed, but instead custom-mixed after being ordered, so we can assume that their RY4 is made-in-USA. I don’t know whether Butterfly’s makes their RY4 from scratch using their own choice and recipe mix of tobacco, caramel, and vanilla flavorings, or whether they use a pre-mixed all-in-one RY4 flavoring as their base. I can state that Butterfly's RY4 doesn’t taste like either Hangsen’s or FlavourArt’s pre-mixed RY4 flavorings, which are the two all-in-one RY4 flavorings closest to the best Classic retail RY4s.

I hardly ever buy retail RY4s anymore, but I did order a 30ml bottle of Butterfly’s RY4 (in a 50/50 PG/VG base) on Monday during Butterfly’s 60% off sale (which continues through December 2nd). If you’re interested in a Classic RY4 that’s as good as any out there, I urge you to pick up a bottle or two now, while it’s dirt cheap. (No coupon code is needed; the 60% discount is applied automatically in the shopping cart.)

Now I am really looking forward to receiving my Butterfly's RY4!! Thanks for well thought out, thorough, no holds barred, honest reviews Bill. Yes, we all have our own tastes, but I have not gone wrong yet with your recommendations, and others that contribute here. I know a few contributors that share my flavor preferences, so if they say it's good, I can be pretty certain I will like it. I am somewhat constrained by pg levels; some companies do not offer customization and too much pg is like walking on a desert in my mouth at the first puff. Takes awhile to re-hydrate. But everything in moderation is my motto. A little here and a little there and I get the idea. Thanks!

Very good reviews, Mr. Bill. I wasn't surprised by your comments or grades. The only difference is that I tasted a stronger butterscotch in the Throat Yogurt. Maybe the month+ steepage has mellowed it.

Hopefully you can now come up with the perfect mix ratio for Mom & Pops RY4 concentrates. I am curious if they taste better with a weak mix (8% +/-) or need a strong thumb (18% +/-). My guess is the latter, as that is how I mix my Tobacco Haze and my son's Koolaid concentrates. I wish all vendors would offer their flavors in concentrates. It would be better for them (no worries about nic or PG/VG ratios) and us (we could customize nic and PG/VG).

Thanks for the quick and honest reviews, Bill. You paint a pretty picture with your prose!

Received this today at the very least it is quite unusual.

It seems like the flavor is going away fast in this VR4........I have a iTaste MVP 2.0 in the mail so I will leave the little i have left for it to get here and taste it on there to be sure it's just not my set-up. Right now i have a Halo G6 with the KR808D1 battery so i have no way to tune anything. I have just ordered a bottle of Dekangs RY4 just to see what the ORIGINAL was like. http://www.eliquidmarket.com/e-liquids/dekang-ry-4-eliquid/

Gonna wait for the updated list then order the TOP 3 :):):)

Ah yes, another of the many vapers who mistakenly believe that Dekang was the "original" RY4. Well, I'll just keep posting what we researched and know to be true, that Janty RY4 was the original, marketed initially in 2007, and Dekang's first RY4, produced some time later, was a reformulation of that Janty liquid with a different recipe mix and flavor profile, as has been true with every subsequent revision of Dekang RY4.

From what I gather, the first Dekang RY4 was sort of a cross between Janty RY4 and the sweetened tobacco blend called Ruyan #4 from The Ruyan Company. After that recipe was stolen in 2009 and apparently lost forever, later revisions of Dekang RY4 became more like RY4 and less like the Ruyan liquid.

Dekang's current version that came out earlier in 2013 is not even called "RY4." It's called "Dekang DK4."

Tell your friend to order some Janty RY4 DK Series to get as close as possible to the original.

I had read your previous post on this and in no way did I believe it was anything close to original or even any good. ( Nor would I even know). I do read and heed your post and quite honestly enjoy your post very much. I simply ordered this just yo see. If I don't try as many as I can I will never get the experience and knowledge you have on RY4s. (And I'm sure I'll never have the knowledge). I will be ordering the Janty.

My Indigo order has shipped. I'm excited! I thought that the EliteVaporworks RY4 was pretty tasty when I first vaped it, but that was before I did some research in this thread. I very much look forward to two of Mr. Bill's higher-rated RY4s. :thumb:

I'll have to order some of Janty's RY4 DK Series in the near future, as well.

Thank you billherbst for starting this thread and maintaining all of this information - and thank you to all the other members who have contributed.

If I don't try as many as I can I will never get the experience and knowledge you have on RY4s. (And I'm sure I'll never have the knowledge). I will be ordering the Janty.

yellowsnow,

My post wasn't aimed at you, but rather at the quoted section.

I've got nothing against Dekang RY4. Heck, my 50ml bottle of Dekang RY4 from 2011 gets an A- grade from me on The Big RY4 Report Card. I'm just on a crusade to correct the misimpression held by many vapers that Dekang RY4 was the original, so every time I see that stated in writing as if it were fact, I get on my little soap box and wave my arms around, saying "No, No, NO!"

Seeing the quoted post again, I couldn't help myself. I had to say, "Not so fast..." There must be a thousand posts like that one on ECF.
