Yeah, our power company - BC Hydro - isn't publicly held, so no stock to protect. It's what's called a Crown Corporation - a vestige of our British heritage meaning that it's owned by the government and the people. Employees have pensions and benefits, and because of the reduced profit motive, we pay about $0.083 per kWh (about 6 cents USD).

Another reason the rates are lower is because Hydro sells its surfeit electricity to the US, including... wait for it... northern and central California. The money from this commerce is used, by charter, to reduce the cost of our domestic energy. Information on the whole process is publicly available, again because of the company's structure and governance.

So while everyone sometimes resents any utility company, Hydro does a good job. It's our geography and our weather/climate that are doing us in, just as you say.

We've had rain for the last few days. So good to see the forest undergrowth spring up again. We didn't have a really bad summer, though, as it rained about every 10 days throughout. We only had a complete ban on power tool use for maybe 5 days in total - a new record from what I'm told. Usually, you can't use them outdoors from July (sometimes June) to mid-Sept.

I'm limbing some trees and picking up all the year's detritus on the forested south side of the property. Lovely work this time of year.
I am so glad that you all had a mild summer. Probably not a ton of fun when you are in the middle of it but no fires for fall at least?

I appreciate your wisdom and it spurred me to look up “surfeit” (excess) and what we pay per kWh (.22 on one tier and .28 on next tier). Quite a difference my friend! Say, since we are importing from your neck of the woods, how about a little break?? Hahaha

Again, thanks for the info. We could sure learn some things from our neighbors. Have a good one and happy limbing. Perhaps send a sprinkle or 2 of rain our way? :)

I may have never mashed that "agree" button harder in my many years on ECF.

Snow storm blowing in today. At a cafe in town waiting for my winter tires to be put on. Perfect timing! Hope everyone has a great day :)

One downside is that our cheap grid energy actually makes things like solar power a much more expensive option.

At the rate we pay for electricity, a modest solar system to power our property would take 30 years to be "paid off" in equivalent grid savings.

Hydro knows this and rather than lord this advantage over the solar movement, they a) offer rebates in our area for installing a solar system, and b) in the case of a grid-tied system, are willing to buy any energy you produce at a higher rate than they sell it themselves, effectively paying down the cost of the solar system faster. In fact, they go out of their way to get us all using as little grid power as possible (eg, rebates for all kinds of energy efficient house upgrades).

Again, we to the south of you, could learn so much. Bravo!!

Hey there @Doffy, Ive been seeing some news coverage of horrendous fires “down under.” Tragic indeed. Anywhere near your neck of the woods? So sorry, wherever it is.
Long way from here.

They are North East. I'm South East, just over Bass Straight from Tasmania.

Happy Almost Thanksgiving or 4 day weekend or end of November :)

Feeling pretty giddy here as we are expecting our first real rain in a couple days!! Just need to get thru one more day/night of High Fire Warning. Yep, we can do it!

How’s everyone doing out there?

Doing great, Robinowitz! Looking forward to Thanksgiving and then everything turning into full-blown Christmas! Woo Hoo!!

Happy Holidays, REOville!
Great to hear @jifjifjif! I must say that I LOVE the sweet potatoes, stuffing, pumpkin pie, etc, etc, etc. And lots of leftovers :). It is one of the 3 days a year that our business closes, so we get to party hardy with dear friends. (Party hardy for us means the above menu, lots of giggles and playing Catch Phrase..... Yes, we are WILD). Haha
