27 is a fine gauge in and around the net ohms range you're shooting for, IMHO. I found no ramp up or down issues, whereas they can come into play with dual 26's (which I, personally, wouldn't want in a tight atty like the reactor).
As for the nuppin', it absolutely sings with the right build in it. I had a lot of success with offsetting the heights of the coils in a dual build (one higher than the other - just as the designer/manufacturer recommended), but I, too, then fell in love with the single overhead parallel coil
