I sent a fairly long thought out email to my senator. This is the response I got today. Man, they really don't care to listen to the people at all do they. They wont even take the time to read what we write. If he actually read my letter, than this response makes no sense what so ever. Somebody seen the word smoke, or the word cigarette and hit auto reply..
Thank you for contacting me regarding the Family Smoking Prevention and tobacco Control Act (H.R. 1256). I appreciate hearing your thoughts and understand your concerns.
tobacco use kills more than 400,000 Americans each year, and an additional 50,000 non-smokers die prematurely each year due to exposure to secondhand smoke according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Data shows that approximately 90% of smokers begin as children and are addicted by the time they reach adulthood. Tobacco use is claiming the lives of our citizens, costing us billions of dollars in health care costs, and affecting our economic productivity.
During the 111th Congress, I became an original cosponsor of the bipartisan legislation to give the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) the authority to take steps to reduce youth smoking, prevent the sale of tobacco to minors, help current smokers quit smoking, reduce the toxicity of tobacco products, and protect the public from misleading claims about the dangers of using tobacco products. With my support, H.R. 1256 passed the Senate on June 11, 2009 and was signed into law by President Obama on June 22, 2009.
